The downtube either needs to be bent out of modified to accept the starter. Just a Hammer doesnt seem like it would do it unless you want to weaken the frame.

I personally have done this. Electric starter will NOT fit without modification. You will have to grind a notch in the downtube which will affect the strength of the frame.
You have to then sort out a battery box and a wiring loom.

Yea, if will work, but you will either need to grind a notch in the frame where the starter goes or just hit it with hammer. If your trike has the trunk on it, you can put the battery in there, just secure it down somehow, mabey zipties? Look at pics of the 82-83 Big Reds to get a idea of where to mod your frame, or just look at a friends.
