valve(s?) on a 200x?

So recently (a year ago) my top end was rebuilt, and since the day i got it back it has had this annoying clicking sound to it (which it never had before) So I was asking my biker friends at work about it, and they all agreed the valve needs adjusting. could this be? and how would one go about doing it with a moderate tool collection? (I have no special valve adjust type tools) I havent ridden it more than 5 minutes since then, and i would like to, but im afraid of breaking it if i do

If its what I think you just adjust the rockers through the valve cover holes.(The big nut looking things on top you unscrew) You will need feeler guages and the right clearance specifications to do the job right but besides that its common hand tools, not hard to do at all.
