Hello,
I own a 1983 ATC 110. I have had it for about a year. It smokes and won't stay running but it will start but, takes for ever and there is always a good amount of oil on the spark plug. The guy before me said he replaced the pistion and rings so do you think it good be vavles? What do you think the problem is and how much will it cost to fix it and how much do new front sprockets cost? Thanks and please respond-3wheelerfan110
If you have oil on the plug, I would say it's a ring job. I don't think the valves would let oil into the cylinder, unless for some reason they're seriously screwed...after this guy replaced them, did he take the engine easy and allow time for the rings to seat, or just replace 'em and go balls to the walls?

He just said "I replaced Pistion and Rings". He didn't tell me anything else but, I was thinking that when I saw all the smoke. He claimed he was a mechinic but, when I called him back and asked him questions he just basically said "its yours now and I couldn't tell you". The brakes are also @#@ up too. I took the whole brake assmebly apart and tighted it and the brakes are still loose as mess. Thanks what do you think he put in it to stop the smoking for that time I tested it out?- 3wheelerfan110
He had probably JUST replaced them, it would be fine then....but if you don't break rings in properly, they won't seat right and you won't get good compression and oil will leak, that makes it smoke. I would say the best thing for you to do is just go buy a Clymer manuals (try http://store.yahoo.com/motobooks first) for your trike, and buy a set of rings and replace them.

new front sprockets are pretty cheap, around $10- $15 from Dennis Kirk.

The piston could of been bored out and he could of gotten standered size rings maybe. Or he didn't change the rings.

Id be looking at complete disassembly and cleaning of the carb first. They all smoke and run rich when cold, so if you havent run it until its at normal temp, the wet plug and smoke dont mean much.
If there is a problem with the rings, the most common mistake is putting the rings in the wrong position on the piston, or upside down (some rings it matters).
