Anybody have a pic of the front of the 86 TriZ Radiators? What Im looking for is my 85 has the plastic deflectors in front of the radiator which angles the airflow with plastic blades, and I want to see how the 86 is setup. If Im right, I dont think they use them, but wanted to see the setup. I had a little trouble with it overheating as it was getting seriously clogged with mud, and am ready to "engineer" a cooling improvement.
On the same note, I was wondering the 250R's use a two piece radiator like the Z, or if they somehow use a one piece like on the TRX, and if they use a slotted front fender for airflow, or if they rely on the large shrouds to bring the air through.
I can help a little bit on this TimSr.
The 86 Z as far as I can tell did not use the angled fins. From old mag pics, and seeing a few on ebay, it just has a guard across the radiators that kinda resembles expanded metal, but of course it's plastic.
The ATC 250R is twin radiator. and it does not have vents in the fender. but the fender is pretty narrow unlike the Z and Tecate. ( I have a stock 85 R fender laying around from years back). The 250R has pretty big shrouds compared to the Tri-Z. The 86 Tecate has the biggest of all. Almost too big. and it uses a vented fender along with the vanes on the front of the radiator. I also think the 250R has the same looking radiator guard as the 86 Z.
I would think the angled vains on the 85 radiator is nothing but roost protection. I've thought of removing mine, but I'm not having over-heating problems.

When I got my 86 it didn't have anything. I would look around and get the deflectors off a dirt bike. My brother's YZ has them. I would think you could easily modify them.

Wow, looks like several of my posts from last night have "disappeared". Anyways, ill say again, thanks Jeb.
I have not had many problems with overheating other than in heavy mud. Last weekend the mud was incredible. The fender slots and those deflectors in front got clogged. I asked about the angled defelectors because it really looks like a dumb idea. It pretty much only allows airflow through the fender slots which doesnt seem like a great idea when thats where the mud is coming from. The R and Tecate have so few cooling problems that Ill bet the radiators have a lot more capactity in addition to a better airflow design. I know my TRX250R has probably 4 times the capacity. I think Im going to remove the deflectors and replace them with a plastic mesh for starters, and maybe add a couple of those inline aluminum machined coolers, and see if I cant figure out a practical way to increase the liquid capacity. I also see Dennis Kirk sells some kind of coolant thats supposed to work better called liquid ice or something like that. Couldnt hurt! I even thought about piggy backing another radiator, but theres really no room to put one so maybe Ill pigtail some radiater hose to make it hold more coolant.
I was also wondering the 86's used heavier fork springs than the 85. I know they used larger forks, but was wondering if they were any stiffer. Ive got a bent fork leg, and was thinking about just changing over the 86 tree and forks.

I just noticed that too TimSr...not a 100% sure on why they did. I do know that everyone has been noticing that we've been having some breif downtime in the evenings. I've been telling our host to fix it or they get the boot, and I got an email this morning saying they moved us over to a new server, so maybe some of the posts got lost in that transfer.
same with me. I posted last night in open forum about some movies that feature a scene or two with 3 wheelers. It was gone this morning as is Tim's post in this subject. Which I had read this morning.

hey ATC, The server transfer is likely where it was lost. They transfer existing data, while keeping the old server active, and then they switch over so the site isnt down. Anything posted during the transition will get lost.
