Put new rings in, fixed the pullstart (new throw outs, dogs) still doesn't recoil, only ever now and then the spring is good though. I got a carb rebuild.

Pulled it with the truck, wouldn't stay running, throttled it and it bogged down.

Has a new plug and it's gapped right. .060in /.20 mm

I'm stumped. what could it be?

Thats not coorect gapping, LOL. it is supose to be .024-.028 in. What plug are you running (need plug number). Did you rewined the coil spring????

My manuel says .060.. Um a Champion, becuase autozone didn't have any ngk's..and I didn't pay for it so. I'll look in a second. It's not getting any spark when I pull start it. I held it so I know it's not a weak spark.

EDIT: Ra6hc for the plug

I guess i got it backwards.. And yes i do wear glasses, what's that susposed to mean? It still has no spark though, and before i put the new stuff in I did have it running even though it was tough to start.

You said you just put rings in it. Did you get the air gap right on the pulse generator, hook up all the electrical connections, set the valves and timing chain right when the motor was put back in? Lots to check out.

Make sure your ignition coil is hooked up. I snaged mine on something, and put myself through hell until I realized it was unpluged.

take the CDI cover off, between the magnet and the little black box the gap is supose to be .012 to .016 in. there is two ways to put it in, if it is not in there the right way it will not work.

Allright What are the two ways it can be put in? I have it on the top (black box)

My manual says the gap should be .015 to .025. I set mine at .020 . Loosen the 2 screws securing the box, and put your feeler gauge in there and tighten em up. As for the valves, .05 intake and .06 exhaust. Loosen the 10mm nut up (with motor at TDC and cam lobes down), and take a flat head screwdriver and the feeler gauge under the tappet on top of the valve. When you tighten the 10mm nut back, remember to hold the tappet in place with the screwdriver, cause it tends to tighten down with it. Hope it helps.

This magnent that spins...with the motor off, are you supposed to be able to turn it with your finger? I am going through the same ignition problems on my 82 200x. To those w/o feeler gauges....will a credit card work to set the gap?

My timing is off one tooth and I can't get it right on, it jumps either one tooth the other way or more teeth off.

I still have no spark. I'm looking over the wiring harness now, trying to see if there's anything messed up, from when I took the engine out. Could it be a bad ground???

Can I use paper as feeler gauges? I am determined to get this thing to spark, I am saving up for a lifen right now. but I can't wait forever to ride this beast.

make sure you are tdc (top dead center) then line it up.

I've tried..It just doesn't want to be lined up right, being off one tooth won't make it spark will it?

If you have no spark or weak spark its almost always the stator.

wow its been awhile since ive been on here..and guess what...im having the same problem with my 82 185s..timing is correct, air gap on the pulse coil is right, valves are set right, 10.5:1 piston brand new with brand new rings and fresh hone job, ngk dr8es-l plug and all wiring and coil and cdi box and everything else is hooked up right, also a brand new stator coil...i had it runnin for about 15 seconds behind my truck and then it died and will no longer get spark....sounds like the same scenario to me, its getting fuel cause the plug is wet when i took it out....but my pullstart cord broke, i and it wouldnt recoil either and it also has a brand new spring, pawls and the little springs and all...wierd...anyway im having the exact same problem with my 185s
