My R has a flat spot when im lugging in 2nd and up..It acts like it wants to die. It only last for a split second then the mid range hits and its flying..I been messing with my carb non stop for weeks..It never did this when i was having trouble with my topend..Well i talked to 100 people including duncan racing and sudco..They said to try a DGL needle so i did nothing different. Then they said try a DGK Nothing different..I've tried all my clips, air screw and pilot..Nothing has changed.. Then yesterday i went from a 7 throttle valve to a 6..NOTHING!!!!!!!! NOthing changed again LOL...My topend is perfect but i still have a flatspot in my bottom end..My question is should i just put the original needle back in that came with the carb? I got a 52 pilot, should i try a 48 or go larger..All of you know what im running so i won't go though the trouble typing it. Someone must know what im doing wrong cause i have no idea...Thanks!
hmmm... I have a similar flat spot in mine maybe alittle lower down than yours, I think its my pipe combo, becouse my trike runskiller every where else, hmm, maybe someone can shed some light

its something to do with my carb...What kinda pipe you running?
I have a custom built pipe, it was doen by the place the previous owner had the motor work done, he was alot lighter than me so he probabaly never noticed it much but i'm 225 so I can tell, I dont think it my carb, the spark plug looks perfect so air/fuel is dead on so I think its the pipe, goint to get rid of it for something that has more low/midrange

I had the same flat spot with my 36PJ. A different needle got rid of it. I have a DGJ but with a different carb and other variables, it might not work for you.
yea itw a big hit and miss, On mine I REALLY htink its my pipe,

I had a similar problem on my '86 R and this week I finally solved it after several months of trying to run it down. I can't tell you how many times I cleaned and/or tweaked the carb trying to find it.
I am running the stock pipe with an Answr silencer by the way.
The problem ended up being an exhaust leak, the two seals where the pipe silps onto the head. Wasn't much of a leak (wasn't very loud) but enough to cause the flat spot I guess. I replaced the ring and the asbestos gasket. Now she's consistant from idle all the way up, as she should be!
Anyhoo, it fixed mine so I thought I'd throw in the suggestion!

Try running a CEJ. My bike went from a slug down low to a gorrila on meth. Here's a link for future jetting help.

are you sure your float is set right, if it is a original carb the seat for the float needle could be worn. my personal problem with keihin carbs. if you hold the throttle at that flat spot does it clear up? also, where the needle slides thru could be worn. it is removable and there is a gasket underneath it that doesn't come in all the rebuild kits. remove the two torx screws that hold it in.

Well, i put the needle back in that came with the carb and POOF no more flat spot, lol It really woke it up bigtime! The dkj and dgk needles don't work for crap on my setup what so ever..Only bad part was i let my buddy nick ride it up and down the street and he did a stright up and down wheelie in 4th and wasted my perfect oem grab bar and i mean WASTED IT! Sparks were coming out of the back for like 200 yards...I couldn't believe it....Owell, I't could of been worse i guess...I'm just glad it was there to protect my plastic!!! IT's kinda hard to see but the bottom is flat and scrached all to hell and its bent up almost to my fender..It's toast  Guess thats what i get for letting noobs ride my bike! And i told him it was like night and day faster, but he didn't believe me..And it still pulls 6th with ease!!!:w00t:

That's exactly why I don't let friends ride my stuff.

I hate to tell ya, but youre gonna need alot more than 80 bucks to replace that grab bar, I think they are discontinued, and the last one I saw on Ebay went for 275 bucks and was used (no scratches though). :( HH
