Can a trike smoke and burn oil and backfire alot and not have to be overhauled?

not typically. Sounds like you need piston and rings. rings at minumum but i I was doing it I'd go ahead and do new piston and get the vavles checked out.

it can if its flooding severely. that would alow gas in the oil causing it to burn. but the smoke would smell like gas horribly. i dont see rings causing it to backfire . check your timing and carb.

The 200S is know for the slide needle wearing out and causing them to run rich and foul plugs.Raise the clip one notch on the needle to lower the needle into the seat more. It should be replaced if this is the problem but moving the clip will get you by.

We're gonna tear into it tonight and see what's going on.

We're gonna put new rings in it. Everything in the motor looked really good.
Will we need a ring compressing tool to re-install the cylinder over the new rings? This is my first rebuild, and don't wanna ruin anything, especially since the trike now belongs to Throesch! hehe
The valves looked ok, but the exhaust valve looked the worse of the 2. It should clean up ok. Is this normal for the exhaust valve to have carbon build up on it? It was burning quite a bit of oil too.
