Coming along nice there. Within a couple days I am going to start putting my 84 200x back together though it isnt a project, I am just saving it from the previous owner who ruined the frame, sold me it with no engine or airbox and a 86 rear end. So far I have everything back I mentioned but a air box... Good luck with yours!

Thanks, this one was'nt in to bad of shape  ...fork seals were shot, every single bearing (axel, stem, front wheel)was shot, plastic,chain,sproket,start/stop switch, clutch lever perch.....definitely gonna need the rings replaced at the minimum(ran fine but smoked a lot)...already rebuilt the carb...plus all the little things...

My wife thinks I'm crazy  but I'm having a blast rebuilding the old girl....:p

Good Luck with the 84....

Looks like it's coming along nicely. :beer I cannot think of anything more rewarding than tearing down an old beat up trike like that and redoing it. You'll be sure to have a permanent smile on your face once it's all done. No matter how much it costs. :w00t:

Thanks,I have a smile on my face everytime I look at what I've gotten done so far, it's turning out beautifully....I can't wait till its all together ...It's actually going a lot smoother than I expected,I havent really had as much trouble finding the parts as I thought I would either. I may have to find another project after this ones finished...:Bounce...even if it has four wheels and is wrecked or something..:naughty:

Dammit!

Looking good! Is it rattle can or spray gun?

For bearings, send a pm to dads here on the board. He's a dealer and will give you a great deal.

Believe it or not it's a rattle can.....BUT......I used Dupli-Color 500 degree Engine Enamel, supposed to be fuel and chemical resistant. After sanding and degreasing, I used the Grey Engine Primer (2 coats)then Ford Red Engine Enamel (4 coats/1can),finally 2 coats of their Clear Coat. I must say that the finish is OUTSTANDING ...it absolutely does not look like a spray can paint job, the clear coat made the real difference, and once the paint cured it seems to be relatively tough, we'll se how it holds up.

Thanks for the bearing info....

For anyone else heres a list of paints I've used.

Dupli-Color 500' Engine Enamel

DE1612..Grey Engine Primer
DE1605..Ford Red......................frame
DE1636..Clear Coat....................frame
DE1650..Cast Coat Aluminum...swingarm,trees,forks
DE1634..Low Gloss Black.........engine,pegs

Follow the directions exactly ,TAKE YOUR TIME,and you'll get an unbelievably good finish, I was amazed.:Bounce
One side note , when using the Cast Coat Aluninum, the use of primer will change the finish of the paint. NOT using primer gives it a shinier painted look with the clear coat over it(very nice). Using primer under it will give it more of a flat cast aluminum look even with the clear coat.Hope this helps.

I plan on having the tank professionally painted with a base/clear, just to make sure it will hold up as long as possible.

Nice work, BP. Keep us posted on your progress.
ATCR250R- you mentioned that your 84 has an 86 rear end? I have an 86 that's got a bent axle, & I'm considiring all options, maybe I can bolt up an older 200x swinger to my 86? There's quite a few out there.........

Someone posted in another thread that a lot of 300ex parts are the same, at least for the 86, I think he said you could use the axle from one, I'll try to find the topic and post a link.

My bad it was 250r axles , heres the quote

Ebay is your best bet. denniskirk.com also. Im pretty sure durablue 82 250r axels will fit if you install them back wards. Brand new 300ex 400ex 450r hubs are the same. Rims/Tires are availible. Maier makes plastic. You can still get an after market seet cover but i highly suggest you PM a guy on here named moshman355 and have him restore your seet. Tank/Shrouds are not available aftermarket or OEM therefore you will have to restore your old ones. Fork Boots are available on ebay(ftermarket). Wiseco makes piston/rings still. DG, and cobra both still make aftermarket exhausts. prmatv.com makes real nice grab bars for the 86 200x. Im not sure about what other shocks will fit it but im sure some others will fit. Aftermarket Bars/Grips are available all over the place. I think moose makes a thumb throttle for a 400ex that fits it. 400EX carb will fit i belive. Brake pads are available. Mainly all this stuff is thru denniskirk.com

It does take a while...your looking at 2 months of work...with more to follow. The hard parts done, now it's just a matter of buying the "big ticket" items..plastic,exhaust,restore seat, motor work, restore tank...and a few little things like chain/sprokets,front breaks, air filter,decals...maybe new bars...it just takes $$$$$$

Cant you just clean up those rear fenders real well? They looked like they were still in really good condition. I think there was an article around here somewhere about restoring old plastics to make them new again. I think you may have to do some wet sanding, but i think it would be cool to still have the factory fenders on there. Anyways, good luck with that project, it looks great!

I wish i could but they're broken in 2 spots, melted in another, and pop-riveted back together...beyond repair.

Here is my '86 200X after restoring the fenders. It can be done with a plastic welder and plastic renew. The fender was broken fairly badly on both sides where I marked. Those plastic welders work great. Save those original fenders if you can.

bp739
09-26-2006, 06:02 PM
Those fenders look great, but mine have about 50 pop-rivets in the which have rusted and stained the plastic..and a hole about the size of a quarter melted by the kick starter...I just think they're to far gone to salvage.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments, it's good to hear from others who appreciate the time and hard work. I must say it's all been worth it , I plan to work on it over the winter and hopefully have it running by late spring or early summer. I have definitely found myself a new hobby, for those times when I can't be riding. There's no doubt in my mind that I will find another "basket case" to do after this one...I really want to find an 85' or 86' 250r...but thats for next year,,,I've got finish whats on my plate first...:D

Good luck finding replacements, even Maier are a bit pricey for '86-'87 200X fenders compared to the '83-'85 200X.

Well, she's almost done and it's been a while since I posted any pics, I just got my tank back yesterday..my neighbor paints cars so he sprayed it with automotive base/clear for me and it turned out great. Well heres the latest. I just need to get the seat done by Mr & Mrs Moshman and finish the motor....what do you guys think.

Awesome, complete OEM 86 200X. I just love the look of the 86 X's. I'm working on mine as we speak, great job bud!!

Now, get off your wallet and restore an 86 350X, sell your "turd" for the proceeds :D ;)

really nice work:drool:  are those viper rear tires? have you run them before? if so how do you like them?

yea those are Vipers, but I couldnt tell you how they are cause I havent gotten to ride on them yet...lots of guys say they're a good all around tire.

Very nice. You are missing one small detail though. You need to hit the fins on the head with some fine sand paper to expose shiny aluminum. Other then that you have done one hell of a job. I want to do the same sort of thing to my '84 someday.

Well I've got around $900 into it. I got the trike for next to nothing though, and I did 98% ofthe work myself (moshman did the seat, and my neighbor painted the tank)..

it runs and rides great, I dont beat it at all ...I usually just take it for short leisurely rides. ...I've got other machines to beat...this one was too much work and looks to nice to beat up...she's not quite a garage queen but close, very close.
