I just got a new set of tapered sterring head bearings from dads. (thanks) I have taken off the top triple, the nut, the cover, the top ball bearing race, the ball bearings and the bottom tray that the ablls were sitting in. There appears to be another race in the frame. Is this part of the frame or will it come out. With it in, the new bearing race barely fits in the frame and the cover barely touches the frame. Somebody please let me know if this thing comes out. Thanks

check out BikeBandit.com They have some decent microfiche images for parts lookup. I use them as a sort of service manual.........
Pound it out, thats the old race..

Fast forward to 2011... Was anyone able to remove that collar looking thing and install the upper tapered race? I have an 1985 Tri Z and the part others are saying can be knocked out is part of the steering head. I know machining and I have exellect near vision. That part CAN NOT be beaten out (I did try). Any advice would be appreaciated. Thanks!
The top race has a Lip under it built into the neck, The top bearing will Stick up a bit higher than the neck itself..but works just fine when tightened down.
