I'd start with the secondary drive unit (hi-lo range selector). All of that is on the outside of the front sprocket. Did the chain ball up bad? Are you sure the chain is on the front sprocket?

what does it do when it is in gear? Does it rev freely, or does it bog when you give it gas?

Could be transmission related or even output shaft related - how tight was the chain? Was it super tight or was it normal.

chain was kinda loose and it just revs freely like its in neutral

Check that high/low switch on the side of the case. Sounds like it could have knocked it into neutral.
