Hows it going, new member here coming from Boston. I just bought an 83
YT175K in pretty good condition. It doesn't start yet, the engine backfires when you try to push start it and the previous owner broke the pull rope trying to start it. Also, one of the back tires is nearly flat and one is losing air, so he sold it to me at a grand total of 2 hundred dollars, a bargain if you ask me because of how clean the rest of the trike is. Tomorrow morning Im going to try and get it started by replacing the back tires and trying to see if a new spark plug will do the trick. Any suggestions to starting it? I dont know why it backfires, it does have a new top end and the compression is good, but first Im going to try a new spark plug because a simple thing like that could ruin everything.

I'll almost make book --thats why the pull rope is busted-------

Since you have a two-stroke, Ignition timing is all the more critical. A reed valve can also cause a backfire, but would likely blow apart under the more violent ones.

Welcome to the boards , and dont sweat it. There are plenty of Knowledgeable people here and you'll be running in no time.

We got it starting, the spark plug was the problem. It push starts very easily, but the chain fell off so we had to put it back on. The only problem now is that it overheats too much. Any suggestions for cooling? It doesnt have a radiator, its just air cooled. Do they sell manual fans for atvs?

Explain overheating??

Make sure the cooling fins on the head and cylinder are clear of mud and junk, lean fuel will also raise te heat, the smaller carb on those trikes get dirty much quicker --cuz the passages are smaller.

Just in case----When you put the chain on--tighten the adjusters evenly--The rear axle is your "Wheel alignment" Adjustment.

if it is overheating, there is probably a problem with the oil injection. what symptoms of overheating does it display

After about 20 mintues to half an hour of riding it the engine gets real warm and it starts bogging out. The oil is nearly full, but Im going to replace it because it's the stuff the previous owner had in it. It does take two stroke oil despite it being an oil injected two stroke right?

it takes two stroke oil in the oil injection not in the engine/transmission.. That takes yamalube 4 stroke oil or its equivalent. grade SE or better.
