View Full Version : Trike Stutters, Breaking Up Under Throttle. *TIMING*

Ok last month my stator was eaten by my flywheel. (1985 Tecate 250). Got a new Rickey Stator combo in the mail today and installed it with the timing mark set right. Before the trike was running great, no bog, no problems at all and tons of power. Now the trike is lagging, sometime bogs out until you slip the clutch and under heavy throttle it will break up. Not so much that your out of power but still breaking up. I had a mx port done on it not long ago, I'm thinkin the timing needs to be advanced a degree? The plug base is a nice shade of dark brown but the tip of the plug has a white look to it at the very tip. Anyone shine some light on this situation?

back it off 1 degree, I just went through this; you helped me remember?
I advanced and life got real ugly, I ended up changing jug, head et al for no reason (Not that I don't like the KX head and jug) I'm wondering about your port job though, did an "Old School" do it or a machinist who thinks he knows what he's doing?

Cycle Works Racing did it, Corey Sprock put me on to them. The bike ran great before, super strong but now its breaking up. The timing mark is where it should be, neutral so to speak.

cycle works is as good as any good shop, from what I've heard, so I'd start by retarding your timing 1 degree, load a little fuel in before the spark instead of a "dry hole" white electrode would suggest to me that there is a lack of fuel during the fire phase.

Went for a quick ride that time. The thing kicked back several times before it would start. Definately timing trouble.
Advance it or retard it?

retard first to be safe.

This thing is kickin my ass. Retarded the timing and its the same. As well as advanced, advanced is worse. Right now its set on the mark. Still kicks me back (cracked off a kickstarter earlier) and runs like crap under W.O.T.
Gone up to a bigger main just to make sure jetting wasn't off and its not that. I can't see how it would be jetting if the bike ran great before. I need to get a timing light...hmm.
Anyone else want to chime in?

Hi moose53 here ,your problem sounds a lot like the one I had with my banshee.Replaced the stator with a Ricky Stator stator ,rewound for more light ,and could not get it to run right.Tried every thing I could think of ,sold the bike and the guy that bought it put a new stator in it and it ran fine.It never occured to me that the new Ricky Stator stator might be bad .Tecates are real forgiving with timing,it sould run even a little off.:Bounce

It runs but when you really get into the throttle it breaks up bad. Its mainly at 3/4 to full throttle. It pulls hard up until then. Noticed a little water in the carb bowl earlier. Tomorrow I'm going with fresh gas, cleaning the carb fully and cleaning the air filter. If that makes no difference I'll be checking timing and testing the stator.
This is no fun. Before the old stator went it ran like a clock, now its being so bloody stubborn.
Oh well, makes for a solid day of wrenching.

did you change to the KX cdi?

No its still the stock setup. You mentioned you have the KX CDI right? PArt with it?

Its still kicking my ass. Went and fooled with it five or six times again today and its running a little better but still breaks in the high revs. Monday I'm borrowing a timing light and seeing just how far off I am. Still haven't tested the stator.

Its funny. It won't kick me back anymore and this morn it fired up first kick with the choke. Loosened the stator coils on the plate and moved them out as far as they will go. Waiting on fresh gas and carb cleaner at the moment just to rule those two things out.
ANyone have anything to add?

Check the keyway on the crankshaft and the flywheel to make sure its not sheared or been ground out. We had a machine doing similar and it turned out to be the keyway messed up.

i second the stator being bad, i have my Banshee which is a test bike for trinity racing, lazer star, and ricky stator as of now I have 255 watts of light power, for my 2 floods and 2 spots... and its got a 3K full race motor from trinity racing, first i got no spark, then weak spark, then good spark, and then the bike ran like crap.(pointed fingers back at trinity)..called up ricky and had ricky send me a new stator and flywheel combo..bike ran better then ever...when I was speaking with Ricky Stator's shipping department, I was told it isnt rare for starts to come back.... so i would look at the stator, or pic up..

Yeah RideRed and Moose, I tend to agree. I have the KX 250 complete setup now that I bought the CDI off Darrel. The stator for it needs coils and the wiring loom rebuilt. I'm going to send back the Ricky Stator setup and have them build my KX stator plate for me. This is driving me nuts.

thats what you get when you buy taiwan parts. i have a ricky stator in my lt500r and it does work fine, but i have heard about faulty stators from ricky. there is a guy near me who rewinds stators. his shops name is stator corp. if you would like his info ill get it for ya
