See when you got the head slid up as far as it will go that will give you anuff room to get a hacksaw in to cut the chain:p  ;)

If You can't fit a hacksaw in there You could use a chisel !

at the bottom of the engine is a bolt you need to loosen. This is the cam chain adjuster. Loosen that up and the head will slid off.

Hi guys, i've got the same problem. It wriggles but doesn't come off.
Do I have to dismantle anything behind the CDI cover ?
What size is the cam chain adjuster bolt ? 10 or 14 mm ? I ask because I'm not sure which one - there is a 10 mm on the side about 40 mm long and a 14 mm below the gear shifter quite short. Maybe its another one ? thanks in advance.

14mm, if I remeber its a big 'ol SOB. and yes you do. Take that cover off and everything behind it till you see the cam chain.

oh also when/if you take the cylinder off you also have to unscrew a bolt in the center of the cylinder on the left hand side. This holds the rubber piece that the cam chain slides over. if you dont unbolt that the chain will stop and you wont get the cylinder off.

Thanks, nearly there... it's now caught on the frame, despite removing the tappet cover. How can I slide the head off without having to remove the whole engine ?

Cancel that last question, I removed the top engine mount bolt and the engine dropped just enough. Now the tyre is in the way, arghhh !!
Thanks 250, your advice has been excellent. I may need some guidence for the reassembly soon. Primarily getting the timing in the correct position.
