I was wondering what the best way to paint exhuasts was. Im planning on painting my 86 ATC 250r head pipe and was wondering what works best. Ive heard of people powdercoating their pipes but never realy heard about how well it held up.

Just spray your exhaust with some high heat paint and it should be fine. I painted all my exhausts with high heat paint and they all come out perfect and last a long time.

Before you do anything you have to make sure it is cleaned. I've heard of some folks dipping them in muriatic acid first to get all the rust and other junk off of it. Personally I've always just wire wheeled mine to get everything off then paint them with a 1200 degree BBQ paint. they hold up well if they are properly cleaned first.

yeah im gona sandblast it first. i once tried spray painting the exhuast on my sx with like 500 degree paint but i gues the pipe gets hotter than that cause it started smoking real bad and smelled horrible for a while till i blasted it back off. So i deffanitly dont want that happening agian.

eastwood also sells heat paint in 4 or 5 colors and its good to 1200-1500 degrees

That is EXACTLY what I do, too. The 1200 degree paint forms a ceramic finish when cured, just by running the engine and cooling according to directions. Cheap and rattle can convenient with good-looking, lasting results.

Fahrenheit. I refuse to use Celcius. Fahrenheit gives me a greater degree of accuracy.

Yeah same here. If you go to walmart it comes in a couple colors. I used to have black but then I switched to silver as you can see in my sig....... Make sure you sand it down good first and put 2 coats and it will last quite a while:beer

hey chris200x is that the 1200 BBQ paint you where talking about? if so where do you get that stuff at? is it a spray bottle or just a can? Also does the pipe look glossier in person? or did it come out pretty good in that picture? Id like a little more gloss on my pipe. Do you guys think that the engine block enamle paint stuff would come out any glossier?

well just got back from advanced auto parts and wallmart and it seems they only have flat black in the 1200 degree stuff but they have gloss black and grey in the 500 degree stuff. do you guys think the 500 degree stuff will cut it? or maybe if i painted the pipe with the 1200 degree stuff untill the pipe starts to expand then piant the rest with the 500 degree gloss paint.

I got that stuff (1200 degree BBQ) at Lowes. The cap says gloss black. $7.99. The muffler might be ok with the 500 but I think that would burn right off the header.

Ok hold off on this info...

I just went out to double check and the cap don't say anything. I just assumed it to be gloss. It is much shinier than any of the flat blacks I've ever used. The pipe actually looks much nicer in person than in that pic. Not real shiney but not dull like a flat would be. sorry.;)

I bead blasted my header and painted it with some weird brand 1200 degree engine paint that my father got from work (hes a diesel mechanic). It held up great until I started riding exclusivly in the sand. The sand coming up from the front tire is starting to blast the paint off. I think ceramic is the way to go....do it once and forget about it.
