Hey how do you get this piece off (1st pic) so that we can access the sprocket bolts? when we opened it up we found this (2nd pic). We picked this one up for free...the other owner had it apart for a rebuild and obviously screwed up?

The pulse base should just pull off of the cam. Usually this is pulled off before the rocker cover is even removed. It is probably just wedged on. I checked my manual and this should come off easily. I would use penetrating oil if its that tight.

Don't forget to pull the little dowel pin first on the cam shaft

if you havent taken the gear off it will be easy. there is a timing inspection screw on the top of the lower end (about a half inch in diameter and has a slot for a flathead screwdriver. Take that out and turn the engine ever until the line with a "T" on the magneto lines up. I think there is a arrow it should line up with. then put the timing chain over the top gear so that the dot is exactly at the top. if the chain is on both gears, and the "T" is showing and lined with the arrow, and the dot is at the top EXACTLY, then its timed correctly. just FYI, the cam gear can go on 180 degrees off, so make sure neither valve is open. this would be called top dead center. Im sure someone here couple copy the correct verbage from the manual, hope I made sense.
