I will be running a supertrapp and K&N airfilter on my SX here within the next couple days. I was hoping someone could explain what the amount of discs do. I wanna get the most low end grunt outta the setup I can.
Also can I just get away with lowering or raising the clip on the needle in the carb without rejetting. As some of you may know by now I really aint too crazy about taking carbs apart. :)

if you had a stock pipe and filter you realy should put a larger main in it to get it to run better. maybe like 10 sizes bigger or so, then you can mess with the needle and air screw

All depends on what the motor is runnng like right now, what does your plug look like after a burst at full throttle then killing the engine?

Well I t was running fine with the K&n onit and the stock pipe. Just a lil black on the plug last time I checked.
I won't have the pipe here for a few more days so this gives me some time to find a good starting point?
Does the amount of discs on the back of that muffler come into play here as well?
Dammit!

You need to do a plug chop to be able to tell if it needs rejetted or not. You do not have to take the carb apart to change the main jet. It's accessible from the bottom. It's actually easier than changing the clip which may or may not be needed as well.
More disks = more top end (and louder)
Less disks = more bottom end (and quieter)
I ran my old modded 200x with 18 disks on it. It was loud but not like straight pipe loud or anything. Had a great deep tone to it. You'd think it was something bigger than a 200.
Edit: in theory, the more disks you run, the more flow you will be getting which means you need to jet richer for more disks. Just put the pipe on and do some plug chops though. It's the only way to know for sure what it needs.

Chris I'm running my K&N and my bassani (basically a straight pipe as you have heard) and with a 135 main its still black.

Hmm, looks like I'm going to be going with just a few discs then. I rode Huffa's Sx with the ST on and that thing has some umpf ripping through the tight wooded trails compared to mine. I think he was running 6 on his. I'm not really looking for LOUD cause my neighbor is pissed at me the way it is.
I guess I'll just go ahead and order some jets now just incase. I don't have the manual no more,, does anyone know what the stock jet size is on the 85 SX?
I can see this turning into a nitemare already!

So that number 130 you gave me... Is that the stock size on the X or the SX?

if you have any questions as to stock jetting go to bikebandit.com and look up the SX. All the numbers I have given you were SX
