which way does it go

was trying to change the oil in a honda trx 125 and i thought i was opening the drain plug but after i got the plug out ,no oil only a spring and a shaft with holes in it shot out , didnt see which came out first the spring or the shaft,can anyone tell me?and what it this ? :oops:

The plunger goes in first. Then the spring. What that is is a cam chain tensioner. I am thinking there is a adjuster on the left side of the motor that should have held it in. I might be wrong though.
