I've got an '83 200e and the chain has a tendency to jump off the rear sprocket (even in the yard). The chain doesn't seem to have too much play. Now I'm working on changing the left engine case which cracked (man, those things get brittle when they're old!!). Could I reinforce the case somehow or prevent the chain from jumping? Does anyone else have this problem with big reds?

check your rear axle bearings that would cause the chain too jump

Ever consider fabbing up something like this? This will save your case if the chain jumps.

if your bearings are shot in the rear you can have the chain as tight as you want and it will still jump. Kept happening on my quadsport till I figured out WTF was happening. try to wiggle the rear end and see if it has play.

same thing happened on my quadsport
turns out teh swinger bearing tube was trashed and gave it so much plan the chain would slip off

Sounds like you need new bearings and/or a new sprocket.
