85 big red tech question.

hey guys,i can pic up a 85 big red real cheap. everything is really nice. the only problem it has is he says the gears are hard to find and engage.he says it is real hard to get in any gear,but it will go with some effort. any one had this problem before? or does any one know what the worst case repair it could be?will i have to split the cases to repair this? it sounds like a shifter rod problem or loose shift drum plate? i dont think it is in the gear cluster.are the shifter parts repairable without splitting the cases? thanks for the info

sweet thanks for the info. i thought it might be something easy like that.just never really worked on many utility bikes before. i think iam gonna snag her up.maybe in time for trike fest.cosmetically the thing is cherry.tank, plastic, etc. 200 bucks. i will use it for a workhorse in the yard. 60 inch mower deck.here i come:lol:
