I have washed a few tanks out with Dawn dish soap. I wash them 2-3 times and have NEVER had a problem with fire. And I have brazed holes in 5-6 tanks.

If you have any way of steaming the tank out for a couple hours that would be the way I would do it. I've never tried it any other way .

Have a little life insurance mixed with some (fire)insurance for your garage and that should work, But I was thinking some sort of water and soap type of material like Howdy said, or if you can fit you hand inside of the gas tank hole, use an SOS pad and clean the inside of the tank.

if you have any co/2 it will flush all the air out because it is heavier. then keep a small flow going and you can safely weld on the tank.

I have seen a guy wash them out with vinigar to clean them or take the tank to a radiator shop and have them dip it in there cleaning tank, but it will remove the paint.

Hey Mate,
When I had to weld on some old propane tanks here is what I did...
Give it a thorough clean out with dishwashing liquid and hot water. Once this is done you can simply fill it up with water(right up to the top) as this forces all of the vapours out.
Hope this helps you...
