View Full Version : Smoke from top of the Motor?

There alot of smoke comming out from the top of my 86 200x. Its the hole that is right on top of the valve cover. I dont know if its sposed to or not cause it has a rubber hose that connects to the frame that i havent put back on after the rebuild. Is this bad or is it normal? Is it hurting my compression? I thought it might have something to do with my valve not seating right or not at the right time. Why does it do this?

Post a pic of where it's coming from?

There is a breather hole or somthing on the top of the motor and it has a hose that connects from the hole to the frame. I would post a pic but i dont own a digital camara.

Nobody can tell me whats wrong?

It sounds like a crankcase breather and yes it would be normal to puff air but not billowing smoke.

it smokes really bad! more than the exhaust!

So nobody knows what this problem is?

Bye-Bye piston rings. thats called "blowby" and its caused when the rings get worn out and cant seal the combustion in the cylinder. The pressure leaks into the crankcase and it has to come out somewhere.

Time for a rebuild.

that sounds like blow-by too me as well

I just rebuilt it in february with a new piston and rings! If the rings were bad then it would burn oil from the exhaust and white smoke and it dont. That cant be the problem!

the only thing i can think of is something to do with the valves.

Did you install rings correctly?

Yea, the guy that bored it for me put the rings on the piston for me, but this has only done this for the last 2-3 weeks

you been driving around with out an air filter??? sand and metal moving parts don't mix. still sounds like blowby.

yea i have an airfilter but how could it be blowby?

If i had a dollar for every time a biker has told me a shop bored a cylinder and screwed it up...

10 minutes on an improperly bored cylinder will destroy the rings. "Last 2-3 weeks" is about that long of a time.

Also, you didnt say that the cylinder was honed - was it? If not, by by rings.

Valve guide seals cant cause that. If the valve guides leak, the oil goes in the cylinder and out the exhaust.

Time for a compression check.

He said he honed it, it felt real nice and smooth. Can you tell by touch? My exhaust would smoke if it was a problem with the rings, right?
