Hey... Good to see another 185 in the works... Have you seen mine? Do a search for 185S restoration and it should come up. If you need any ideas let me know, as I can help. I know where an NOS seat for your 1980 185 is, still in the box... Let me know if you are interested in that. I also have a few NOS parts for your year that I ordered by mistake. Remember to dip those wire harness tabs in black rubber tool coating (double-dip) for a "just like Honda made it" finish... Good luck, and keep us updated! James

thedeatons, I do need a nos seat, whats the $ on that, I've already got 1 mortgage, and thats plenty so be gentle on this hillbilly. the reason that I'm doing ths project is that she is as old as me, so thats that.
I'll double dip those connections after I get this monster running. I was thinking about new piston rings, but the compression is amazing on this 26 year old.
Thanks for the feedback, this is my first total teardown and I'm having fun.
I still need some front forks from that era and a exhaust.
Overall, this is just a $180 barn find that ran when I got it so $ well spent?

Another thought from me. I am trying to keep this as close to 1980 era as possible, so the metal flake paint is a giant leap for resto at least for me. Anyways, I never thought busting my *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* for a house would be so rewarding as to having a garage of my own finally.

I believe when I checked on the seat it was $225 at Western Hills Honda. You'll want to talk with Terry in Vintage Parts for it.
When I mentioned dipping those frame tabs, I only said it because now is the time, with the frame all apart. I held my frame up and straightened the tabs out, then dipped them into a cup. There should be one tab near the head tube, and one tab near the taillight mount.
The forks should be easy to find. In fact, I'll betcha Mike at Vintage Motorsports has a pair laying around, and he could even paint them for you. Check out my restoration thread to see the paint work he did on my forks and tank.... James

Hey Mate,
Awesome job on the trike. Those little hardtails are cool.Did you do a full sandblast on the frame.I ask this because I am resotring a similar trike and am wondering if sandblasting is worth the$$$
Thedeatons,
Could you please tell me where to pick up this coating.I am resoting a 200 and have the frame apart and would like to do it soon.
Cheers

Hey guys... check this out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-ATC185-ORIG-SETUP-INSTRUCTION-MANUAL-1980-USED_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34237QQitemZ800813 7402QQrdZ1
The coating can be found at any tool store. It is a rubber coating that dries hard, to coat the handles of tools like crescent (adjustable) wrenches and/or pliers.
I had mine sandblasted, and powdercoated, and while it has cost me a small fortune, the looks on everyone's face that sees it is worth it.... It is like brand new.... James

I didn't have it sandblasted as I'm trying to not break the bank. I did however buy paint stripper and engine degreaser and used that on the frame. I then took my dremel with a sanding wheel and used emory cloth to finish the paint removal. Then I took brake cleaner and wiped the entire thing down. My next project is an 83 big red that my parents bought for me when I was 13 at an estate sale so I plan on having that powdercoated.
After reading your post again I realize you are talking about the wire harness tabs to double dip in that tool coating, I'll do that as I'm waiting on my rear bearings to get here before I get her into a rolling chassy. Tires, I need tires too.........

1-Set carrier on it's side, on a block of wood with hole in it (so bearings can fall through)
2-Beat on bearings (using large screwdriver) with largest hammer in toolbox. Be sure to beat on different points around the bearing to move bearing evenly.
3-Install new bearings

2lb hammer and the longest 1/2 in extention in the toolbox; whack copious times while rotating around the bearing sooner or later thay all fall out.

Yeah, those bearing carriers were a beouch to get out. I had a big chisel that worked for me. I'm still waiting on my new bearing from the guy on ebay that I bought the new ones from, it's stopping me from turning it to a rolling chassy
