most liquid cooled 250r's use the same axel. the 85 uses a slighlty different one, but a 86-89 one works too. If you choose to and want to buy all the corect parts a 400ex axle works too, you will need to axle, hubs, brake hub and i'm realy not sure abut the brake caliper, somebody on www.exriders.com will know better than me.

You mean you have a 1989 TRX250R.. right? And I don't see why a 1988 wouldn't fit.. deathman said that most liquid cooled R's use the same axle.

Then it's not an '89.. Check the tag on the frame. Its either an '85 or an '86 if its liquid cooled.

'86-89 TRX and '86 ATC axles are interchangeable. I don't think there's any difference in the length. '85 ATC axle is different. I am currently using a 400EX axle in my '86 ATC, with 400EX hubs, 250R locknut, brake hub and rotor, 250R sprocket. 400EX sprocket may fit a little better, but the brake rotor on a 400EX is larger diameter and won't work. 400EX hubs do not fit on 250R axle.
