I used to own an ATC250es or 250 "big red", They were called "super reds" in Australia and they never sold 250SX's over here.

I was always curious as to the differences between a "big red" and a 250SX. If you look at a big red engine and drive line they are identical to the SX. IE: 250cc, shaft drive, electric start and reverse.

Is the SX faster top speed? The big red has bigger tyres than the SX so that would lead me to think that the big red had a higher top speed. Did they change the internal gearing for the SX?

Does the SX have a super low first gear like the "big red"?

There is a diffrence in the gearing somewhere. Im pretty sure it is the diff gearing but I have never been able to get a straight answer. The 250sx has a higher top speed than the bigred. I find my 250es does lack in top end a little bit...

Yes the SX has slightly different gearing from the big red. It doesnt have the super low gear like the big red, but has a much faster top gear. I like the big red much better when climbing hills and such as the low is nice. With the SX, you have to play with it to get the right gear to make it up hills, or you have to hit it hard.

I feel your pain matt, great for workin on but needs another gear when your playing around.

Have you thought of buying a sport trike yet?

I see a very nice Tri-Z is advertised from Brisbane at the moment
