carb adjustment help

I have a 79 110 that i just got running again. Now it runs, and has plenty of power, but backfires like crazy, and is really rich. I put in a brand new plug, and after a minute of riding, it is completely black with carbon/oil. how should I go about correcting this?

Also, what, other than timing, could be causing all the backfires? Thanks

Any one of a thousand little things can cause it to be rich. And thats probably whats making it back fire. First check the carb afr screw may be out too far, too big of jets, bad needle, stuck choke. Check the carb first and see if its in good order then go from there.
