According to my manual, after the first 3-5 hours your supposed to change the oil. The first oil change is an important one, because you want to get all of the metal shavings out of the system that are coming from the new parts.

So what weight of oil should we use???? I've been told 80, while others say 10W30, but then other say its tooo thin in warm to hot weather and I live in CA. I was told by a good friend of mine he uses the valvine 50W racing oil and works great.
Is this true or he just a backyard shade-tree?

Well, all trikes have different Manufacturer reccomened oil weights, that's what you should generally use. My recommened oil for my 83 YTM200 is 20w40 oil. 80 weight oil is insane to use in an engine, it's strictly gear oil.

Y'all do have manuals for your trikes, right? If you own a trike, and don't own the manual, you don't really need the trike. Because if you own something, you should take care of it, and how can you take care of it without knowing how to? Go to http://store.yahoo.com/motobooks cheap Clymers and Haynes manuals for trikes. Go for the Clymer though, they're better.

I've always used 10w40 year round in all my machines. Not too thin in the summer and not too thick in the winter. ;)
