Im new and need help. I have a mostly stock 85 250r. The guy i bought it from put a foam filter directly on the carb and tore off the air box. that seems to dangerious to me so i ordered a new box on e bay. my problem is the bike runs really rich after 10 15 min it starts to clean out but it never really feels right whats the best way to start leaning it out. do i need new reeds what the heck does that mean. right now i still have the foam filter on. thanks for any help! i will post pics

Most likely running with out a box will make it run LEANER not Richer. With the box taken away it is getting more air, more air = a higer ratio towards the fuel which in turn leans it out.

Is it stock jetting that you know of? The air filter foam itself, is that over oiled? It should just have a tacky feel thru out and not to the point where you could sqeeze any excess out.

As far as the reeds Chipper, yours may or may not be worn.

The reeds go ahead of the carb and tuck into the cylinder. What they do is open up more as throttle increases and control the flow velocity of fuel-air mixture better to give you crisper throttle response down low. They are made out of a flexible plastic-fiber-carbon or whatever (I'm really not sure?) that tends to wear on the edges as hours go by which does effect how they operate. Different companies make them out of a varity of materials now a days I think.

There are 2 stage reeds and thats what yours are. The 3 pedals you see (3 on bottom too) in picture below open up 1st since they are divided and take less throttle to do so. Once they open and more throttle is wicked on the 2nd set which is not devided opens up also.

I'm no reed pro or anything and am just giving you the simple basics. Years ago NO 2 strokes had reeds and had pooer low end. I think Yamaha was the 1st to produce them in the early 70's.

Here is a pic of your EXACT set up. You don't buy the whole unit, just the reeds you see and screw them in.

Some companies do make a whole different reed cage though for even more performance!

Boyesen engineering has all kinds of reed related items .........

Also, if there is any rubber ahead of carb that connects carb to reed assembly, check for cracks from aging. Any air leaks ahead of carb will result in a dangerous lean condition that could seize your top end (piston-rings) up. Usually a leak will cause a high idle though.

I'm sure "R" guys will come on and leave you know where to get and what brand works good. They go for about 30 bucks for a set I think?

thank you that was very helpfull. i also forgot to mention the moter was freshly rebilt. i dont see any problems with the rubber between the carb and moter. the bike idels good and will idel at really low rps. idont know if thats bad. would it be ok to play with the air screw that is just above the float bowl. how about running the gas a little leaner now i am running it at 32/1.

havent had a trike in 15 years but man this thing is amazing i have a feeling im going to spend way to much $ on it my wife is really excited:cry: i bought it for 1300 and it all most looks new.i think i am hooked for life i also picked up an 85 200x
