Well I am in the process of assembling the tranny for my Uncles 85 250SX and can't figure out what position the shift drum needs to be in during assembly. If someone could help me I would really appreciate it. Been all through the book and all it says is to be in neutral and doesn't say how to tell if it is or not.

I just look at the grooves in the drum and when it's rolled all the way down none of the shift forks will be engaging and of the shift dogs into the respective gear.

That is what I did and just slapped it together and it will shift through all gears. My only concern is when I try to turn the tranny by hand it locks up when I hit 2nd or 3rd gear. Not sure if this is right but could be since the tranny might have to be rolling for the gears to mesh properly. Would really like to know for sure before I through this entire engine together and find out it is not right. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
