How strong is a stock 70?? Should it be able to handle a 250lb adult without a problem?? I got one for my son and it seems fine when he is riding it but when I ride it, it seems to fall on it face as soon as I try and shift out of first gear with it. I never had one before so dont know how much weight they can handle. Maybe the engine is just tired and needs a rebuild.....like I said it runs fine with my 6yr old driving.....just curious......Thanks....Paul

I would think it should carry you. I just bought one and also weigh close to 250. So I hope so anyways. I did a search on this forum and its seems alot of adults ride them also. I am a little worried now, I read that if the front fender is hitting the head bolts it could mean a bent frame or forks. The frame looks staight, not sure about the forks. Mine just barely rubs, but I think my fender my be aftermarket also.

It should pull you arond ok so I would check it out, how does it run otherwise? As for the bent frame, take off the tank and if it looks like it is dented then it is time to look for another frame.

The frame is perfect. I have it completely taken apart for a paint job. I think it may be the forks or the plastics may not be stock. Look at the picture of my frame towards the bottom of this page and tell me what you think.

I thought the forks did also. I will check into that when I get home. Thanks!

That 70 should pull you easily. You will know if the motor is worn out by the blue smoke.I would clean the carb bowl out,the screen in the petcock and flush out the tank.

You might want to check your clutch, it could be worn or out of adjustment. About the front fender hitting the head bolts or the tank, check the stop for the front forks attached on the lower backside of the frame head, if they get bent out of shape, it will do the same thing, let the forks turn too far. A little heat and some persuasion with a hammer usually will get the stop back into place. Make sure to either remove the fork bearings or to clean and repack them with grease later.

70 is pushing some blue smoke on start up but it goes away when it warms up.....also sometimes third gear is messed up......feels like it is slipping....other times it works fine.....Carb. is freshly rebuilt so I do not think that is the problem.....How hard are they to rebuild??.....Thanks.....:wondering

smoke on start up is the valve seals....its not a big problem...in fact some racers dont run them at all

I always have at least 1 or 2 70's floating around the shop.Me and my 11 year old have a little track set up behind the house by the fire pit and in the summer we will race against eachother for hours, and I am 6'1" and 225.She has a 79' with a 3 speed and I have an '85 with a 4 speed. The 4 speed gets me @ good and so does the 3 ,but that 3 speed gets a better workout with me!

Im a little curios if anyone has installed any of these knockoff pitbike motors in there 70's? You can get a 110 or 125cc motor that drops in with a manual clutch. Lots of them on ebay.

They bolt right up. Problem is that they are kick start. I'd check DrATV or Classic Honda for some low-buck HP on the stocker. Zongshen or Lifan engines are some of the better knock-off engines. I have a Zonger in my CRF50 knock-off (RCM125SX) and it hauls *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*. They are not Honda quality though, they hold together well but the trannys kinda suck. Expect to miss gears every now and then. Another bonus with these engines is that they're wound for lights.

A person on another website has devised a way to make the aftermarket engines pullstart! All he uses is a trx left side cover, then he machines the pullstart basket and the flywheel to mate together, a couple of thousandths off of each one and bolts it together and puts the pullstart on, rather ingenious, and voila, pullstart. No extra battery weight or nothing. Now I've just got to find some trx sidecovers.

what about a trail 70 4 speed manual shift? Still kick start I know but would it fit?

THE reason you have to use a trx side cover is the cdi pickup coil,,,, its mounted in a bad place,,, if you wad up a chain you will break it off for sure,,,, i haven't seen a case saver for them yrt either... a trail 70 motor will bolt right in a atc 70,,, you will have to address the clutch lever i used a foot brake , then used the old brake lever as a clutch lever,,,
