First of all, I'm going to give a little background:

About 2 weeks ago, I took my newly acquired 85' 200x to a buddy's place in New York State to ride. First night there, about 2 miles deep into the dark woods, my chain snapped. The previous owner stated everything on the machine was stock, except for the front sprocket (which is larger than stock and there is no cover for it because of this). This in mind, I figured...Old chain = weak chain. We hauled the machine out with one of the 4x4's and left it for the night. Next morning, we fix the chain with a new link from the local dealer, but than realize when the chain snapped it cracked the left side alternator cover and oil was leaking, so I retire the X for the weekend.
Anyway, I bought a new cover on ebay and the alternator was included with it. Although, that alternator was in pretty poor shape, visually and the wiring was not stock. After seeing this, I decided to swap the perfect alternator out of my old broken cover. Everything is going smoothly, I fire the bike up and the headlight flashed and stopped working from there. I checked out the service manual for the X and checked the continuity between the lighting coil (yellow wire) and ground, there's continuity. Although, between the "Exciter Coil" (black/red wire) and ground there was no continuity.

After all this.....All I want to know really is how to make my headlight work again? :wondering

I really don't think it was something when I swapped the alternators because when in NY state, i believe only my high beam was working...but that could also be the old bulb.... Any help is greatly appreciated!:beer

Quick question, when it flashed, was that the bulb burning out?

Hopefully you just burnt out the bulb and need a new one.

I thought it was the bulb, but according to the service manual...there should be continuity between the "Exciter Coil" (red/black wire) and body ground and there is not. Although, the lighting coil had continuity. I don't really know what the exciter coil is for...:wondering I really should try and replace the bulb. When i tested for continuity of the exciter coil, the run switch was probably off, I don't know if that affects it at all, but I have had no problems starting my X.

I know the bulb is a 12v 60watt, but what type of bulb is it? I'd like to stop off at the Napa store on my way home from work w/out having to go home and get the bulb and go back to match it.

Get a new bulb first and see what that does. If that dosent work then obviously something else is wrong. Mabey you have some bad wires??

Does the exciter coil affect lighting at all? I'm going to pickup an H4 bulb from the autoparts store after work and see what happens with that.
