I'm about to replace the fork seals on my 86 R. Is it neccesary to remove the allen bolt and the damper rod just to replace the seals, or does it have to be removed to remove the fork tube?
Thanks

if you are changing you seals it is best to take the forks apart and clean them. get all the dirt and crud out of them. if you dont, its pointless to install new seals, dirt gets on them and they will leak like the old ones.

look for my post on how re-build your forks.

Loctite the allen screws back in or theres an ugly surprise in the future!!
Take them apart and clean the crud out. While the tubes are out, polish them to 2000 grit or finer to remove any nicks that can ruin the new seals. i use lapping tape instead of sandpaper.
They arent too hard to disassemble.

Thanks for the advice. I may try to replace the allen bolts, so the heads are better for the next time I take them off. They are almost stripped. You think I can get them at a hardware store, or will they have to be OEM?
