I have the opportunity to buy one of the two following machines: a 1987 200X in great shape for $1200 or an 85 350X in good shape but needs a new timing chain for $1000. What machine should I go with, all opinions appreciated.

How Big/tall are you and what kinda experiance do you have with riding/motors? I would Snatch the 200x personally...

I would snatch them both up and then stick the 350X on eBay.. lol.

I'd have to say I'd roll with anything '87, if it truly IS an '87. Hands down.

if the 200x is an 87, get it. If not, get the 350x...

Buy the 350x and use the 200 dollar difference to fix the timing chain. If you buy the 200x you'll end up wanting something bigger and better later.

Like deepa said man, if the 200X is an 87 get it, if not get the 350X. What one is more stock?

I am pretty good size but I love the 200X's (83-85) never had 86 or 87. But I wonder if I would like the bigger machine where I am a bigger guy.

The 350X's are great, the gears are awsome for ridding trails and the suspension is allmost unmatched. Speedwise you can upgrade the 350X to go alot faster cheaper because of modernly produced quad parts!

350X hands down.

Id take the 87 200X, put it up on E-Bay and make a little money off it, then I would snatch the 350X and you will still have some cash left over from your winnings.

1987 200X has the lowest production numbers, so that means RARE! At the very least you should tell someone on here where it is, so we can grab it....

Just went and looked at the "87" and it was an 86, which is what I was suspecting it was in great shape though. I am going to see the 350X in the morning. What are the benefits of the 86 200X versus the 83-85?

I was going to say, there is not such a thing as an 87 ATC.

I must disagree with you, there are 87 ATCs out there. Honda sold the 200x, the 250sx, and the 250es (big red) as 1987 model trikes in the USA. I own a 87 big red and a 87 200x. There are pictures of a 88 big red from down under.

Well the 86 has 6 gears Vrs the 83-85's 5 gears, BUT the parts are much harder to get than for a 83-85. IF it were me i would get the 200x, fixing machines can get to be pretty hairy, expescally if its not all thats wrong with it and you just dont know...

There is a really nice 87 200x on ebay right now, just search honda 200x and then powersports, there are only a few complete 200x's on ebay at the moment.

Mike at Vintage has a 1987 200X as his personal trailbike. It is on his website... If anyone in the US would know an 87, it would be him, seeing as how he restores for Honda Japan's Collection Hall.... 87s exist, end of story... haven't we been here before?

The 1987 250R and 350X are just urban legends. I don't think any were ever made except prototypes you see in pictures. There's quite a few 1987 200x's out there along with Big Reds and 250sx although none are any different from 1986 other than small details (mostly cosmetic but the 1987 200x does have a keyed ignition and dashboard). Common knowledge around here really.

That makes sense.

1987 models were manufactured in 1986 for the new year thus making it an 1986 in my book because that is the TRUE year it was built.

Wrong! They made Big Reds, 250sx, 200x, 125m and I think a couple more in 87. I have personally ridden an 87 200x myself. The biggest diferences between the 86 and 87 200x are the keyed ignition, white tank shrouds, different decals and the 87's had a red swingarm as opposed to the 86's silver.

I should have rephrased that. 250R's and 350x's were never made.

That's true for every year. My 1986 250R was built in june 1985.

Ive found out that machines made in november and december are usally the next year model so if yours was made in june its a 85 im sorry it would be a 86 not a 85 if the tag says 86 and made in june ita a 86
