I spent some time on the bike today wrenching on my 86 Tecate. And made some good progress and had some little mishaps also. I do have some questions on a few things and would like to see if you guys can give me some insight. Also got my new fenders back from Kawasaki. I now have 3 sets of NEW OEM rear fenders and the left side shrouds. So anyway after i got them here i wanted to see how they looked when they were mounted. So i got some pics. Also I need some things and will post a wtb in the classified section. Let me know what you guys think and help me out with the wiring and carb issues. Also will the 40mm carb from the tecate work on the 98 kx250 motor?

so what is the question? there is no way i would use a tecate carb on a 98 anything. carbs have come a long way since then. I bought a 39mm pwk and put it on my 86 tecate. it worked great and really woke the bike up. i also used a 85 kx250 ignition system and a 87 FMF kx 250 pipe!!

Sorry the qustion I have is on the wiring harness. I was wondering how you guys would go about this. Would you try to use the tecate harness and wire it up to the kx250 motor? Or would you use the kx 250 wiring harness and then add the lighting whatever to the stator? Also what mods did you guys have to do to the motor mounts? I have the lower mount and the rear swingarm mount lined up fine. But the front mount is 1/4 inch off and the upper mount is backwards. I can cut the upper mounts off and turn it around backwards and I think that will fix the top mount. But did any of you guys make your own front mounts?

use the kx ignition. the tecate stuff is way different and would not work with the KX stator.

i have never put a later model kx engine into a t3 frame but all swaps are the same. line up the sprockets and make the rest fit.

Will a kx250 pipe fit onto the 86/87 tecate frame and engine? The reason I'm asking is because i'm lookin for a new pipe for my 87 Tecate

Looks like on the front mount, you could make new aluminum mount plates that bolt on.

On the head-stay, you might could come up with a way to make new plates that will bolt on. I know they'd have to reach aways to the front of the head but maybe something can be made to work using the stock mounting holes. I'll try to take a look at mine and see if that's feasible. At least with new plates there's no cutting and welding on the frame.

Also, are you running 200x rear hubs? You have 8" rims on the KXT and they look like Honda. :beer

Love new Factory Tecate plastic!

Jeb, where do you see hubs? lol I see the wheels but no hubs. Be interesting to know what hubs he does have though.

If you look really close at the rear wheel in the first pic, you can barely see part of the hub. Now, from there who knows what hubs they really are. The rear rims look like 200X flavor to me, so I'm just making an edumacated guess. Plus I've heard in the past that 200X hubs will fit 86/87 KXT splines. They are definitely not stock rims for any KXT.

Ya jeb good eyes or memory. I told you along time ago that they had some honda hubs on it and I was running 8 inch rear tires. I have a set of 200x hubs out there i will check for you guys tomorrow to see if they will interchange. Also yes those nasty looking wheels that are on at the moment are 200x wheels. I had three sets laying around and needed something that pushed easier then the skat traks. And also set it up higher for more ground clearance. And thanks for the ideas on the motor mounts. I may do that so I dont have to do anymore cutting.

jsut so you know a honda 250r or 350x front rim will also bolt on there. the pattern is the same as the tecate front hub!!

Ya I am currently running a 250r front rim. The 200x though wont fit. Tried to take one from a 86 200x no dice.

This is a bit of a hijack, but it is 96/87 Tecate related.
Does anyone have an issue with their 86/87 T3 idling. Mine 87T3 will start up from cold without complaint and idle away. As soon as it warms up It won't idle anymore?
I scewed the slide stop screw in enough so the engine will fast idle but then when its cold it revs flat out until it warms up.
I read a bit on the Mikuni carbs and it talks about a idle air screw that you can adjust but i cant find an air screw on my Carby? (I'm not talking about the one on the side that you can adjust with your hand)
I'm sure the idle circuit is not working. Did Kawasaki block of the idle air bleed adjustment on those carbys?
Any help anyone could offer on this subject would be much appreciated.
Sorry for the thread hijack, If you want I will start my own but since the Tecate boys would be in here i thought maybe it could enlighten us all......

the best thing to do with that stock tecate carb is put in on ebay. buy yourself a keihin 39mm pwk. more power, better throttle response, and easier to tune!!!

Agreed, my stock carb was very troublesome because it was flat worn out. Have a 38mm Mikuni TMX on it now.

MY carby has done stuff all and is in good nick. Hasn't anyone tried to get their 86 or 87 Tecate to Idle properly? or am I just kidding myself?
Can the Idle be adjusted?

BigGreenMachine

The idle screw not working for you? There doesn't seem to be an air screw adjustment.
