new to this group and just picked up the ATC
it has been sititing for several years

so far have checked every electrical connection and wire
no corrosion and all wires have continuity

has new spark plug
plug wire has 425 ohms resitance it's 8 inches long
took the carb off cleaned very clean on inside adjusted to base settings should run after spark problen is figgured out
compression is 150psi
changed oil
removed chain cleaned oiled and replaced

leaves four things that could be wrong

#1 Alt is bad and no power, have no idea how to check this

#2 coil is bad, unsure of resistance it is supposed to have when checking

#3 CDI box is bad, is there a way to check?

#4 pickup is bad or out of adjustment

also is there a way to bypass the alt and hook up a battery to see if it will start up

Welcome to 3ww.

My bet would be the excitor coil inside your stator. my 85 200x did the same thing.

I also bet the exciter coil is bad. ou can have ricky stator rebuild it with a high out-put light coil and a exciter coilY for $100. You can buy the parts seperatly and put them on yourself (you will need a solder gun).

I would get the 75 watt light coil is your light is weak also....have you run the trike? The hyperparts coil is like $10. These are found on the inside of the alternator cover on the left side. Drain oil first!!

Search the forums for exciter coil and you will find the info to check yours.

tested the exciter coil and nothing completely shorted out just ordered a new one from hyperparts

bought the 200X at a swap meet in Detroit this past Sunday
haven't run it yet but trough the search found how to check the CDI veverything but the exciter coil is good

This is why I like old Hondas my choppers take abuse if they break I can always find parts even big bore kits

ohhhh SOHC 750 in a modifed ATC frame

Dammit!

I might need one of those lighting coils for some aftermarket lights. How many watts is the stock one?

When my 200x would run shorts periods and then die and not restart I just bought a used cdi box off of E-bay for $5.00. I guess I was lucky that that fixed the problem.

I don't know how many watts a stocker light coil has but, all the ones I have seen barely light the bulb. They are like 20 years old...
