How important are the dowel pins that slide into the cylider base bolts. I forgot to install one when re- installing a fresh top end. I've already torqued the jug. It hasn't been fird up yet. They don't appear to be that important. What do they do. Am, I ok to leave it out. Thanks...Dove

O- man you better put that dowl pin in, If you don't your base gasket won't last long. The jug will move even if you think it wont.

OK. Next question then I have everything torqued down but haven't hooked up the carb, added coolant or installed the reed cage yet. The bike has not been started. Can I loosen everything up carefully and install the dowels without replacing the brand new gaskets on the base and head?

Dovesprings250R, I wonder if you could roll the motor over to TDC & just slide the jug up enough to clear the studs & slip the dowl in without taking the piston out of the cylinder. I sure would try it anyway.

Can you rebuild a top end on a liquid cooled R without removing the motor from frame?

Thanks guys. I am going to lift the cyliner up off the studs carefully and try to insert the dowell without damaging the gasket. If it looks suspect I'll replace the gasket. Thanks again.
