Well.. after having the R for 2 days, it threw the chain. The guy said that the chain was really old anyway, though. And I want to get a chain quickly so I get have it back up and running. Does anyone know what size of chain I would need for my +2" swinger? 520 X what??
Thanks!
Ben

Just go out there and count how many links are in yours... And order up a good 520 oring chain. you can get them long and just cut them down to lenth.

That isn't the right size of chain, but I can use that one, right? As long as the chain is 520xwhatever, it will still fit? I'm almost sure it will, but I figure I'd better make sure..

I have a plus 2 on mine and I had to get a 110 link chain then remove about 5 or so links.

Well I went out and counted the links on the chain that was on the R.. and there were 98 links. I was like "WTF? That can't be right.. the X with stock swinger has almost that same amount..". So since I had a 98 link RK MX-Ring chain sitting out there for the X project, I figured I'd put it on and get another one for the X. Well I went to put it on, and it ended up being about one link short of fitting.. but I can't have a 99 link chain. I need a 100 link chain. Would having some slack in the chain hurt?

And the 98 link chain was an RK.. the ones that are "pre-stretched".. so would that make much of a difference?

Save yourself some time and hassle and order a 120 link chain and cut it down to size, I made a costly mistake not knowing my orginal swing arm on my Tecate wasnt extened, so I ended up buying 2 new chains (DID X-Ring). As the saying goes, "its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"

How do you cut the chain? Do you need any special tools..?

Get a 98 and put a half link in it.

get 100 and adjust it,,,,,,,,,, half links are not as strong or dependable as the chain,

I decided to go with the 110 like a few people said to. I didn't want to get a chain that was too short. I thought it was kind of weird that a 98 link chain almost fit, but everyone else with a +2" swinger said they needed to get a 110 and take a few links out. I just followed their advice.. so now I need to know how you cut it/take links out..

you need a chain breaker (yeah duh). If you dont have one a small engine shop, autoparts place, or maybe even wal-mart should have one. I was lucky enough to just walk into our small engine shop and have the guy break it right there.

i dont agree. You dont need a chain breaker. I didn't use one. I used a dremel and a punch. Here is what I did, First, ptu the chain in a vise. Then cut of the little nob on the outside(name?!) and start punching it throught with an appropriate sized punch. Good luck! OR go and buy a chain breaker.

Sorry to ask, but did you try turning the carrier to see if it would cut you more slack? You sound like a rookie on this so I had to ask, just in case you did'nt know that part. :D

No I didn't try turning the carrier. That thought occured to me last night, too.. and when I went out today I forgot to try.
And I am a rookie at this.. lol. This is my first (well.. second.. but the first one I've ever rode except a Big Red.. which doesn't really count..) chain driven trike.. so I'm still learning the ropes.

Well give that a try first, remember you don't want the chain on there tight, Your manual will say how much sag you want... I always use a peanut grinder to cut my chains, works for me. remember your riding a performance machine, so don't go cheap on chains and sprockets, get good quality stuff.

I got an RK MX-ring chain for my X.. it cost me $70.. but I figure it'll be worth it. They're guaranteed for atleast a year anyway. And I just bought a KMC o-ring chain for the R. I don't know much about KMC chains, but it was in the mid-priced range so I bought it. Anyone ever run a KMC?

And the reason I didn't buy a high-priced chain was because that I'm not working on the R at the moment. All of my money is concentrated on the X. I just bought this KMC chain so that I have a chain that will last me until the X project is over, I save up some more money, and THEN I will re-build the R with quality, top-notch parts.

for a +2 swinger you will usually need about +4" of chain. i just recently went and put an +3 swinger on my blaster and needed 6" more of chain. hope this helps.
