Ok I'm down to the little nut i guess it is that holds the clutch on. The service manual calls for a nut removal tool you can get from honda, and as luck would have it, I dont have the tool. So is there an alternative means by which i can take the nut off without this special tool?

yes number 1 in that pic I posted. I see no other way to get to it without taking the clutch off.

I switched mine without removing the clutch. I took the pin out of the big gear and pulled it out as far as it would go. Then I got the bolt out and put the nw one in. It barely fits and some forcing is needed. The spring can be tricky as well.

Ok I'll give that a try. Sounds alot easier than taking off the clutch.

Yeah you are going to need that special tool to remove that clutch, but it would be a wise investment because it can be used on most all atc's. even some honda street bikes. I Bought mine for $12 off of ebay.

I agree 100% They are so handy I keep a couple of them at the shop. I haven't ordered any in a long time, but $12 sounds about right. I know this tool works on Honda200x's, 90's, 110's, 125m's and others. Jeswinehart made himself one out of a socket. Here is a link to one of his postings ( with a picture ) on the subject:

I hope this helps.

Yep i definatly need to get that tool. Tried getting in behind there today and my fat fingers just could navigate well. I tried making the tool as well, but my hand grinder is being borrowed so i tried using the bench grinder. Didnt work too good.

One thing you can do to take off the main clutch assembly is get an impact wrench and put it in reverse and spin the clutch nut off.

will it actually grab or just spin on the nut?

It'll spin the whole assembly, but the impact will usually spin the nut off. If the gears are exposed, another thing you can do is wedge a penny in the gears so the clutch wont be able to spin the nut will come off. If the nut is really boogered on there, it'll will just smoosh the penny but it wont tear your gears up, so if the penny bends its no big deal.
