I'm thinking of building a Tri Z with a 4 stroke motor for my wife. I need one that has electric start and hopefully reverse. Does anyone know of a motor that may be close? A little fabrication is no problem. I'm thinking something like a 300ex maybe?

Any Ideas?

only probalem is a 300ex doesnt have reverse does it? A 350 raptor i know has 6 gears and reverse, and its still a Yamaha motor.

good lord...why would you want a heavy 4 stroke engine in a racer like the Z!!??

Sorry to mess with you (***still bitter over the whole 4 stroke craze***)

105lb wife + 250cc 2 stroke=BAD IDEA:wondering

It is going to be for my wife. I was thinking of just picking up a 4 wheeler or a 250sx, but I've got just about everything to do a build up on a Z except the motor. I figured that a tamer 4 stroke would be better for her needs than a 2 stroke. Plus when she rode my AutoX it would die and she wasn't strong enough to restart it. That made riding in the pastures kinda hard because if the X died I would have to get off mine and restart hers. Reverse is not required, but an electric start is.

warrior motors are pretty big,but the z frame is quite tall.maybe an option?

i got a friend at work who has a 05 crf450.i was a die hard 2 stroke fan till i rode that bike, and a few other big bore 4 stroke quads.man they are so easy to ride, and very forgiving.i love the tractable power, and user friendly delivery.if i cols make a 450r motor fit my 250r,i would.they are awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Ive loved 4 strokes for 20 years now. DirtBikes Quads and Trikes. Heres why, they last forever and the maintenece is pretty low. Can pull up to a gas station and fill up and take off no mixing no worry about going to lean and blowing up and no top end jobs every 2 years. Now I love the 2 stokes allso as they are insane and a blast to ride but Ive allways liked the 4 stroke thunder and the way the power is laid down. These last 8-10 years the 4 strokes are so far advanced from the old ones I used to ride that I found the Fun Factor to jump way up and the Power delivery was fun and pretty safe.

Now For a Perfect Motor for your Wifes Tri-Z would be a new 4 Stroke 250 DirtBike Motor from I guess a Yamaha Motocross Bike. They fly like the 2 stroke 125's but its a Hi Tech 4 stroke thumper that Im sure your wife will be able to handle. They have alot of Aftermarket goodies and Last forever. I guess you will need the wiring harness allso? Im sure with a little modification it will fit in there no problem. The motor is about the same size as a 250 two stroke. I would like to see this mod for Tri-Z's for the Ladies and Younger kids. :w00t:

I would like to stick with a 3 wheeler if possible. I've got just about everything to build a Z....so that is an option. I have read about people putting 300ex motors into 350x rollers to create the "ultimate trailbike". I thought something like that would be fun to try and I have alot of time to do it (my wifes getting her masters and won't be done for about 6 more months). A newer dirtbike motor sounds good, but I wonder what the cost would be.

Anyways I'll keep looking and see what I can come up with.

i would consider a 300ex motor. they have reverse, electric start, and they are bulletproof.

why does it have to be four stroke? a blaster engine would be perfect

I think a wr250 motor would fit the bill. lightweight high performance liquid cooled four stroke with electric start, tractable and powerful best of both worlds. Its a Yamaha and you can use the tri Z radiators.
I was toying with the idea of putting a kx250f motor in my Tecate for a while but as it only ever lives in dunes now I wouldn't want to drop in power.
Don't put a big old fashoin four banger in it. If you going to go down this path do it right. Don't wreck a good Tri-Z frame, If cost is an issue just buy a quad for her, a blaster or 250ex or what have you.

you could try to drop a 225dr tri moto engine in it might come close to fit 4 stroke and electric start and reverse, and its yami. just an idea.

Yeah, the new Raptor 350 seems like a good idea to me.

- The fourstroke dirtbike thing is about to drive me up the way to - They are for helpless riders who aren't good anough to ride a 2-stroke to its potential.

Well, I will try no to be negative and tell you what not to do. Your original questions was, does anyone know what might fit. The answer is no, I dont know for sure. A newer dirt bike motor will probably be a lot of money but is small, but is is electric start...probably not. But I saw you mentioned you had an auto-X. There are kits to make a 200X engine electric start, and a 200e/es or M engine would go in with a little fab work/you can also add the magneto-electric start stuff to what you already have. They put the battery on the left side where the tool box was. Just a thought.

I have often thought of building a mild 4-stroke KXT for the wife. I had thought of the 86 chassis and a newer mojave or lakota power plant. Or maybe the 700 V-force motor. :wondering

Whatever motor you use, since it's a Yamaha frame, use a Yamaha motor. I think it's a great project. :beer

have you ever thought about just getting her a 250sx...its not to fast and it has 3-wheels...just an option

I am afraid if you try to go with a newer Raptor 350 engine or 4 stroke dirt bike engine, you will tie up more money than if you would have just went and bought something else. If it were me, I would try the 225dx first. Shouldn't be too expensive and shouldn't take much work. I don't know for sure though. I doubt many people have ever tried this.
