Can you tell if your valves are bad by looking at them? I don't have the tool to measure them like he manual stats. I am pretty sure my cam is gone. One of the lobes is slightly smashed looking. I will include pics for any thought. Also the cam has some blueing from heat I guess. One more thing, the bushing on the cam has ate into it. The camshaft moves easily inside of it. I think this may have been causing my ticking. I am putting a new cam and rockers in. Still not sure if I need valve. How do you guys clean off all the carbon? Is this normal?

Make sure you have decent oil pressure so the next cam will last. you can check it by loosening the right rear cap nut on the cyl head while it is running. From what I can tell from your pic the cyl head cam surface looks ok

When I clean carbon I spray some pb blaster in the head and take some steel wool and work at the metal and valves till it is all off, or as good as you can get it. I'd do the same for the piston as long as you have the head off if you can get at it.

What do I look for when I remove the cap? Your right though, it looks like it either got to hot or no oil. The bushing on the cam is what really concerns me.

Take the Valves out to check them, check for bent valves and Chiped Seats.

here is a quick test. dry the head off and put lacquer thinner in the valve port. if it does not leak through then you are fine.

if the cam is toast PM me. I have a like new cam & bushing, and a nice rocker box.

I filled the head with engine cleaner, and it did not drip.
