Ok. Got it running and rides nice.
Now comes the clutch. Smooth action pulling in lever and releasing so basket seems not worn.
The problem is, you let it out slowly and then it hooks right up like a lock up clutch in sand rails. You can get it to slip it you let out real slow.
Are the friction discs toast?

What kind of oil, and when was it last changed?

Changed all fluids. Changed coolant and gear fluid.
Used Valvoline 10/40 in gearbox.

You should be fine then. Is this something new, or has it always done this, or have you just gotten it? Worn plates will cause it to slip, not grab. Aside from no oil, clutch springs that are too heavy will cause it to be a lot more touchier about grabbing, and more difficult to feather. These are the only things I can think of.

I would bet money your basket is worn, your not going to feel it just by pulling your clutch in. I would take it apart and inspect it then do the 89 update kit when you have to fix or replace your basket. Clutches will usually outlast the R basket.

85 to 89 baskets will fit. If you can't get one for a while just file yours down for a temporary fix. This will get you by for a couple months. Check Dammit's old posts, he just did the update and I think he posted the numbers for the kit.

It still does this after its been riden a while? I know mine would do that on the very first takeoff, grab and I'd kill it unless I nailed the throttle, then be fine and normal the rest of the day after a few minutes of riding.

Well the trike has been sitting since 2004. Only have like 1 hour ride time on it.
I might get a billet clutch basket down the road here real soon and rework clutch.

Also check the Ridges on the inner drum caused from the Steels...and ....
the steels are "stamped"... put the smooth edge inward and the sharp out..

Thats the honda part number, try service honda for a better price than your dealer.
If you bikes been sitting since 04 your fibers are probably dried out. Let it run and warm up, keep working the clutch lever to get oil on the fibers. Usually when you rebuild a clutch you let the fibers soak in oil for 24 hours prior to installation. It still doesn't hurt to pull the cover off and inspect it though, then you will know for sure whats up with your clutch. If its not your basket take your fibers out and soak them.

Yep fired it up today and warmed it up for a few minutes. Clutch is working MUCH better now.
When I drained oil yesterday, It was nasty black.
Thought about draining again and put some synthetic in it but I don't think I will do that. I don't know if older clutches can handle that and dont want too much slippage.

***UPDATE***
The clutch cable was shot. Put a new one on there and it is smooth as silk now. Can use 2 fingers on it now with no problem.
Not grabbing, chattering, nothing.
Again thanks all to who replied.
