Just picked the 86 up less than a month ago. My buddy picked up the 81 a few years back and didn't really know how to fix it up to run, so we started doing work on it and eventually had dumped 400-500 into it to get it running good and looking decent, and he told us we could just keep it. It became the winter beast that everyone sort've had some fun on until I dropped it through the pond! So this winter I ripped it all apart, repainted the frame and various other parts, and picked up a complete motor off Ebay, after getting further and further into it and wanting to make it really fast, I decided to instead invest in an 85/86 and keep/sell the 81 at the point its at now. So far I love the 86, although the best compression I got out of it was barely 140psi, I still ran my dads piped banshee and to his surprise we were neck and neck... I could holeshot him and he'd gain a very little on me in 3rd and 4th. Keep in mind his banshee is still like new and runs real strong, beats all similar modded banshees that ride on our pond. As far as the 81, the motor I picked up, although I did get a good deal, its got a weak 100psi compression in it and we have the stock (28mm?) PE carb on it. My questions are...
1) Where can I get a carb intake/reed setup that will allow at least a 35-36mm carb for the 81?
2) What do you guys usually get for compression out of your machines, particularly the 85-86's? I know 140psi isn't great, but I think its ok for now.
3) What kind of jetting should be close to what I need on the 86's 38mm PJ... It seems to be rich even in the 30 degree weather... has a 148 Main jet and a 55 pilot... the kid had a 70(!) pilot in there when I got it and a 150 Main.

Anyway, I look forward to bullshitting with you all :TrikesOwn

Thanks for the comments... about the sled... my dad, uncle, and neighbor all grew up on the 72's... Each had a 775cc, and they used to always try tweaking them out to make theirs fastest... It's got a Comet clutch in it which helped a lot, and a few other mods, along with a lot of TLC. The best thing about them by far is the sound.... they sound BALLSY and loud... to the point that when I was 10-12yrs old, my dad would let me ride it and he'd tell me, "dont just put around, GET ON IT" and I'd be scared to. Its no wonder I'm so into fast bikes and cars (I have a 650hp Mustang as well). I remember one time we packed up the 775's and headed up north to a big lake and there were TONS of sleds out there all lined up, and we pulled up on the 775's and you could tell everyone was just like, "wtf are these guys thinking riding those ancient things".. then when we saw them all take a break and line up and talk, we pulled the 775's out, held them wide open throttle down the lake 3 sleds side by side, doing about 90mph, turned around and came back to park near the crowd, and INSTANTLY everyone flocked over to check them out... They certainly got a different opinion on them when they saw/heard them go by sounding like Big Blocks at the dragway. Up until I was about 18 I couldn't even start them they have so much grunt to them, the pull start would send me flying.

Well after being on dirtbikes for my whole life and pickin up the 02 CR250, that has been my favorite, but lately, after riding the 86R, I'm in love with it right now... I'm going to eventually go with an ESR330 or something similar in the near future... I love how all my friends have new quads (banshees, raptors etc.) and they look at these old trikes and try not to laugh, if only they knew the potential and capapbility of these bikes... I can't wait to destroy all the quads on the pond near my house next time we have a big ride day. I've always been a dirtbike guy, and my CR250 owns everything that goes down there because most of my friends have quads so its not really even fair, which is why I wanted to get the 86 so I can be more in their league. I love this 86 I just got, only thing is, the guy I bought it off took off the headlight and put a number plate on... I want lights, but I do like the look of the number plate... would wiring up a set of like walmart fog lights work ok???

For the intake on the 81R you can use anything that fits the 86. The 81-86 250Rs have the same intake bolt pattern so that should open up a lot of possibilities. Here is a pic of my 81 with a factory 300 kit to get you motivated to finish. I am running a 35mm Keihn on an oldschool Pro Tec aluminum intake with a boost bottle port.

First off, welcome to the boards. Hope you like riding, because you are close enough to join some of us who ride quite a bit. Nice group of Machines.

On to your lighting. 4-5 years ago I bought a set of those Walmart Driving Lights. Halogens. They worked quite well for about 2 months. They cant take the abuse of trail riding. I am guess the constant shaking and impacts totally take the life span outta them. I would suggest looking into something like these. http://www.atvriders.com/reviews/trailtechhid.html Before ya get all nutz, I DON'T think you want to buy EVERYTHING they got, just a set for the bars. I friend has them on his Raptor, and they work real good. You can get them with or without the bar clamps. (I have never actually seen a clamp set for a 3 wheeler)
Anyway. I think I saw just the pair of lights for around $75-$80 but cant remember where.

No sh*t... I used to ride in the Clinton pits a lot back in the day... it's where I busted my collar bone up good. I live right off Rt. 20 and practically Rt. 9(Berberians Farm). We'll have to meet up sometime, my buddy's have banshees, quadracers etc. But really no trikes.

Yeah that used to be a good riding spot. Can't ride there anymore though.. I don't have a trike yet either. Might be picking up a '83 250r soon. Needs work but will be a good project. Currently I ride a 2000 Rm250. Seeing its winter i've been fixing things, changing fluids, ect. Can't wait for spring riding.
