Dirt Wheels January 1986:
Article on a 85 tri-z with a big bore (350cc) conversion. Used a 38 flat side Mikuni smooth-bore to a 40. Had a Trinity 6 inch extended swingarm. Center R/L cases had to be machine to take the new cylinder.
Was shown in the sand dunes. Wander if our sand buddies ever has seen one of these or heard of these. Possible they may not have sold many! That makes three different bores for the tri-z. 200 debore, 250, and now 350. Any others????

I have that article. I know its possible. The cylinder could be re-sleeve could'nt it to about 320 or so.

Would a piston from another YZ work? For example, YZ 400 (the old two stroke). I know they make 300 kit pistons for the new Yz's. The only issue is port timing. I don't know much about how this could be done....but I can't believe that some of the smarter folks have not already done this. Also I though someone would have put a 2000 or newer YZ 250 engine the Tri Z.

I remember reading that article. I also remember a mechanic who purchaed the kit after reading the article. I remember it was a lot of modification to the motor. I also remember rideing it once and being amazed at how much power and torque it had everywhere. It was also quite expensive. I also remember it would eat the Banshee when it first came out by a large margin. There was a reason it used a +6 swingarm. lol. Klemm Research did a lot of cool things back in the day. Does anyone remember the tri-z motor in the early quadracer chassis? a very near true bolt in. The Z motor made a lot more power and was much more reliable. The Suzuki was really fast with that set up.

in 1995 i bought a big bore kit for my 86 ytz from trinity. i paid $410.00 for it. that was the new sleeve, piston kit, port matching and head mod. i had to sent tnem the head to re'cc it because i could not crank it. then i only weighted about 130 lbs. then i got in some trouble and my silly a__ wife sold my shi_. but trinity did make a big bore kit for the tri-z. that i know for sure.

I'd give Harry a call at Trinity Motors, he is the old Yamaha Big Bore expert out West. My guess is he didn't make the swingarm and he did the motor work. He may have built the bike, but I know he doesn't make swingarms. He would have sub out the swingarm fab work. He makes some fast motors and up into about 8yrs ago he didn't make pipes. A Trinity swinger, seems like you might have your facts mixed up, but if anyone has a Big Bore kit Harry would.

Harry Klemm is still around if anyone wants to go to the source...
He is not in the ATV industry anymore but still doing 2-strokes building PWC motors. He has a company called Group "K" in Arizona.
http://www.groupk.com

A cycle shop that bears his name is still around in Riverside California although without his influence. Klemm Cycle.

Harrys old company back in the day was Klemm Research.

Someone should call him.

Honestly, I need to look at the article, but I don't recall them stroking the motor. I think they just bored it out and then had a big piston.

You know if people really are interested a specialty company could make this for you.

How much of a bore job would be required to gain an additional 100cc

Can anyone do the math?

slothminx
08-16-2006, 05:19 PM
You would need to bore it from 68mm stock to 81mm bore

With the stock stroke it would require an 81mm piston to be 350.4cc's. I don't think thats do-able with the stock cylinder. You'd be into the water jacket and head studs. 76mm (308) would be really pushing it IMO from looking at my old big bore cylinder.

Ask Craig .."MWKE" He has the web site and info on who Ported and rode the bike but that was YEARS Ago when they did it ... from what Nathan said they got the part's "or the bike" from KLEMM or the YAMAHA Crew that ran his stuff....
he said that the tank, stator, etc was KLEMM !!!

LonesomeTriZ
08-17-2006, 04:30 PM
The tank I still have. But graig told me the engine that came off of my trike went to you for a make over. When I got it, it had a tired 85 engine on it.

I think I may call Klemm. Not only would I like to know about my trike. but I would also like to get some goodies.

I just spoke to Harry Klemm. He said if I sent him some photographs of my Z, he might be able to varify the reports I have gotten. I sure do wish I could get a hold of the original engine. We also spoke of him doing a top end for me. I think I am going to send him a head and jug. It is not like I can not spare one or two.
