the carbs are the same. The 86 has an extra jet. Thats why the 86's start so easy. But the carbs are the same size.

Yeah I heard that the '86 and up carbs weren't as cold natured....that's why I put an '86 carb on my 350X..

The carb should have a serial # on it....that should tell you when it was made perhaps...I think you can look up and see which it is somewhere.

Easiest way to tell them apart is the pilot screws are different

Carb on right is the 86 design

i was just kidding about the 86's starting easier. I dont think it helped at all. I ride with OVhonda alot and he has a 85. I cant tell a difference in starting them. I think each trike has there own way they like to be kicked and once you figure out what they want its all good. :beer

The service manual (Where the 3ww specs come from) is printed incorectly and shows that the carb is 31mm when it is infact a 34mm.

Honda service manual : Id mark: 85 is QA05A and 86 is QA10A : 31mm both and same specs. Dirt Wheels test on the 86 ( Jan. 1986 issue) has it list as a 34mm.
ATV News had it listed as a 34 also.
