Need some advice on my 86 250sx. I just can't get it started in the cold, and the choke has never worked properly. If I used the choke, I could never get it started. I've taken the carb apart and everything looks fine. Any ideas??

clean the carb real good. and lube up the choke cable, it could be sticking.
before i cleaned mine real good, i had to use starting fluid on real cold days.

Yeah, tried that but still have the problem. I thought I read someone say something about a cold start kit but I've never seen one. Anyone have any info on this??

yeah the cold start kits were put in the late '85 SX and on. It shouldn't be that hard to start though. When I had the stock carb it would take 10-15 seconds of starter winding to get it to start and stay running. Are you valves adjusted to specs? That would cause hard starting.

know what? I wonder if that cold starting kit isnt just a size bigger jet. When i got the 350x carb on with the 135 main it start in 2 kicks no matter what. Just food for thought.

Do a seach on "cold start kit" I posted all the info about it some time ago.
FYI there is actually a start jet (orifice). It is pressed in (not screwed in like a main). Among other things in the kit you get a new larger start jet. But you need to have a free moving choke before you do anything.

I think you guys should try to track down a carb off a Fourtrax 300, they have a primer pump on the side of the carb, I noticed when cold I can never get mine fired up unless I pump on it a couple times. I think that it would be a good upgrade and it should work on the SX fine.

Both of my SXs and my ES never had a problem. THe SX's were late 85 & a 87. The ES was a 87. Now all three were a little cold natured at first. Then I ran some Amsoil injector/carb cleaner in the tank. Withing 5 min of ideling they all started ideling real fast. I guess it cleaned the cobb webbs loose. I backed the idle down on al three and never had a problem again. I could fire my 87 BR off when it was 20 Degrees out with no problem. I know this doesnt help, but you may try some strong cleaner added to the fuel.

I gotta do something cuz maaaaaaan.. even with a brand new battery.. she's a pig in the cold temps..
In summer however.. Blip Blip.. vroom... no problem what so ever.. and i don't want to screw with my summer settings too much.
If i heat the garage, she's no problem once started.. i can turn if off and let it sit.. she'll fire right up .. but god i hate it when i won't fire !

My old SX didnt have a choke, and the elec start didnt work, but in the winter it would start in about 15 kicks or so.

About the block heater .. lol.. funny you mention.. i have one actually !! NOS never installed. i'm keeping it for when she officially becomes a garage queen .
But don't get me wrong tho.. i would not trade my SX for any other trike out there. I just need to make it start when cold !! lol...
I think i may have contributed to my hard start actually.. i just had my selenoid stick on me and had to let it sit a few weeks while i waited for my new battery.. so i finally got the battery and gave it a few blips to make sure things were ok. and it fired up ( while i had the garage heated for a few hours !!! ) but i killed it not to fumegate myself .. and did it again the next night.. yesterday was the 3rd day of me doing this so i figure i have a nice black plug right now !!! .. just can't locate my plug socket.. argh..

If you can't buy the cold start kit, get an EBAY 30$ 350X carb and put the SX jets in it.
