I've been trying to set the timing on my 1983 Yamaha Tri Moto, I thought i set the timing correctly but now when i turn it over with a wrench on its intake stroke and cover the intake with my hand I can feel air blowing out instead of sucking in. What am I doing wrong. I have the arrow on the cam sprocket poiting towards the top and i've lined the T up on the fly wheel up? Anyone that could help will be appreciated greatly.

was it on the compression stroke when you lined it up? If not, the timing will be off. When its on the compression stroke, there should be play in both rockers.

yup i've checked..could it be a possiblity that when they rebulilt their pullchord they set it to pull the wrong way.

I dont know if you could do that. But if you want to check, take the recoil off and pull it, it should make the motor turn counter-clockwise when looking at it from the left side (pull starter side)

No, there is a fixed point under the cam cover that you line that notch in the sprocket up with.
If your timing is on (which from what I understand, it is), maybe its a differant problem???

i was told to just point the arrow to the dead center on the top to set timing,..i must be doing something wrong.

What should i be doing.

there is a little "bump" in the casting behind the cam chain cover, it is dead center with the slope of the cylinder/head.
heres a picture i created.
It's kind of hard to find that little bump, but its there.

So, were you lining the sproket up wrong?

i beleve i was lining up the sprocket wrong, now when i pull it over it backfires and half wants to run and sprays fuel out of the carb. Any ideas on what may cause that.

if you adjusted the valves with the sprocket on wrong,When you correct the cam timing --Yor valves will be --WRONG---
Readjust valves and try it again
