I tore the rear end off last night and I think its the bearings that are shot. There is metal shavings in the diff oil and the axle is really hard to turn, does that sound like bearings?
It also had a clunk when I rode.

Also...Is this an expensive fix? What special tools are needed?

Prolly worse than bearings. Sounds like the "chunk"---aka the gears in the diff, are GONE. Find a junked rearend or buy new gears. Basically, you are having to overhaul the rearend. No "speacial tools" as far as I am concerned, but you may have to get creative with some things. Good luck.:wondering

Well, that sucks, guess I'll have to figure out how to fix this diff myself since the manual doesnt say much about it. Either that, or buy a new rear end.
I doubt that new gears are still available though.

Bikebandit.com:

go to OEM parts, type in the year and application and then select "driveshaft"-there is a microfishe pic there and all the parts you would need. Good luck.

I know where I can get a good used diff, so that will be cheaper than rebuilding mine.

The only thing left to break on my trike is the front forks, and the brakes, Ive replaced every thing else. If it was a Honda, i wouldnt have these problems! Should of bought a Big Red!!

Glad you found a good used one. That is DEFINITELY the way to go!:beer

Naw,come on! The yamahaulers are great trikes. Unfortunately, they do have the problem that many of the 300 cc and less yamahas had up till recently---- WEAK rear ends. They had problems with timberwolf, wolverine, and beartracker quad rear diffs "grenading" through the years. Once you get that solved, rest easy ......that is the weakest thing about the whole trike.

Why would it happen shortly after the rear end was off for the first time?
I changed the bottom end and had to take the rear end off, and less than an hour later off riding, the rear end went on it.
This cant be another coincidence...

Did some dirt or maybe a stone fall into it while it was loose before? I ask because it doesn't take much to trash a bearing, then when the bearing goes the gears are sure to follow.

I couldnt see that happening to easy, since I covered the open part right after I took it off with a rag, but who knows, maybe the rag had a stone in it...

well, it was the pinion that 2 teeth broke off of. Bearings were great
I still cant figure out how this happened.
time for a new rear end:(
I guess Yamaha made these trike yellow for a reason:lol:

The diff's are the same arn't they?

Yamahauler

No, on the 225's, they have their own cover right on the diff. On the 200's the bearing carrier doubles as the side cover for the diff.
