View Full Version : Snapped a few new pictures of the 500R this evening

These are the first pictures I've taken since it was lowered down. I did that a couple days ago, last week sometime I think it was? Not sure  Anyways, I totally did away with the CR500 shock and suspension linkage. I modified my frame slightly (No welding required, just a tiny bit of grinding) and mounted a 350X shock directly frame to swingarm. I cranked the preload down on it, and its alot better ride wise. I've noticed I've got alot more traction thanks to that and my new Prowedge type 2 tires I put on the back. It still just spins them like crazy in the grass, even if I dump it in second. I need to get in a little bit of clay and see what it does then because thats the real test. Since I changed the shock setup, I've also got room to run a clamp on uni filter now which you can see in the pictures linked below.
There are 2 things right now I dont like about it. #1 is that the way the bottom of the shock mounts on the swingarm is kinda crappy. Its a fork type mount, to a fork type mount if you follow what I mean. I need to find a shock that same length with an eye on the bottom end and that isn't to wide at the top where it will fit in my frame. The other thing is, the swingarm is at a slightly negative angle. Meaning that the swingarm goes down the further towards the front of the bike you go. Its not a whole lot and its probably not going to bother anything because theres really zilch travel going to be used but just in principle and idea I dont like it.
Most of the :pics: are pretty large in size to keep the quality nice. To large to attach. So I've got one that I've sized down to just display here, and then you can click on the links to see the rest of them. Enjoy, comments welcomed :D

You need a number plate on there to seal the deal. Sick looking drag bike. totally sick.

That is one nice hunk of work, are you going to custom a set of rears for it, (450r?)or just run it "Dry Lakes"

Looks good, damn sure lower than when I seen it!!

Absolutely. While it looked cool as heck with it tall in the ass and low in the front it was some what of a chore to ride and the last time I was really using it I hit a hole in the pasture and it started a high speed wobble around 80mph that kinda got me figuring I needed to get it balanced out a little bit better.

Oh, damn, Billy!!!!!!!!!!!
That is trick as hell. I love it. Defiitely low and mean, for sure.
You ought to be able to lay that out just fine with no wobble. I dig it...... Good Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!:TrikesOwn
I would like that motor in a stock R.That would be a sleeper.
Looks good.

Well that is one mean-looking machine! But dang, such a narrow seat, wouldn't want to think about slipping off the back with two huge tires thumping right at your back  :TrikesOwn
Billy Golightly

 The seat is a normal 85-86 ATC250R one.

come on, you know you want some sort of fenders back there!

Damn Billy that think is sweet. You did some nice work on it.

I agree with Derrick, some small shaved fenders on there would look good, but still excellent work! :beer

Thanks Gabe, everyone else.
Derrick, I have been thinking about some fenders. The problem is (as you know) getting something that matches or comes close to the CR500 plastic. I got a red rear maier from ScottZJ when I bought that seat thats on it now. I never could get it to fit on there and look right with the bottom of the tank. For some reason they drooped alot too. Maybe I'll dig em out and see what I can figure out because your mockup does look pretty cool :)

WOW - sure is pleasing to the eye!!!! Looks way different than when I saw it in person at TF05. Rear fenders would complete it, but it's still cool as heck. SICK!!!!

Billy that thing is BAAADD. I run my R pretty low also, with the swinger on that angle your chain will loosen when the suspension compresses. But man does it help you hook. Try putting a solid piece of round stock inbetwween the two forks on the lower shock mount. Nice work dude.

Hey Jason thats exactly what I had in mind for the bottom shock mount. THe only weird thing is the stock CR500 shock mounts are offset towards the right. Its not quite a side mount like the tigers, but its not in the middle. Its kind of hard to get something straight inbetween there but I'll figure it out. I think once I get that shock mount setup figured out, I'll have most of the chassis stuff done and setup. I can then start working on the engine mods.
Planning on a 50mm Lectron carb with alcohol, Shearer drag pipe, and some port work. Maybe a falicon crank job if the $ and time allows it (Doubtful) before trikefest. The one guy from here, fyi is his username is building a sabretooth atc250R that is gonna be tough to beat. Gonna be ready to roll? :)

Billy, why don't you just paint your fenders to match the tank? It's not like the bike should ever get beat up, really. It's pretty much just a drag bike anyway.
Looks mean lowered like that!

I looked yesterday at this thread and thought...When did Billy ride derrick's 500 and when did derrick finish his 500? Those questions were answered today after I actually read the posts. :Bounce :Bounce

I think its ugly and is about the most worthless trike on the site!:naughty:
I meen what good is it to go 1/8th mile in 2 seconds and making all those Monster Custom $10,000 Drag Quads Get Smoked. Thats alot of money, those guys might get upset at a Trike beating them and spend $20,000 for the next race. Which of course you wont see because it will be over so fast.
Allso its no fun because you cant wheelie it in 4th gear no more and im sure you cant see anything to the side of you when your riding hard. What good is it to ride if you cant see who your smokin or the scenery because when you Turn your Head, It might get Ripped off from all those G forces getting up under the Helmet. Unless your cool and you ride it without a Helmet.:D
Its allso not good for Pulling Deer out of the woods, but im sure you could run some down with it I guess if you dont have a gun. And lastly its not cool because when we line up this summer at the Fest You will Spit mud in my eye at the line and be at the finish before im in 3rd gear.:banned:
Other than that why dont you show off your Freak Bike some more, like in some Video of it being no fun at 100mph against some High Dollar Quad.:beer
and a few Close ups of that Rear end to see the Suspension setup when fixed. Oh yea its allsn not cool because I think I'd be too scared to Ride it:eek: Really.

It might not be good for pulling deer but I bet it would be great with a plow rigged up on the rear. Give my grandpas John Deer a run for its money.

Haha thanks everyone...Some video coming soon of it in action hopefully. I've got one more thing to add to the list of things I do not like. That is the fact that the tip of my shoe has caught the ground a couple times and pulled my foot pretty hard. I shortened the shifter and moved it a little bit further up and I've only did it once then. I might need to find a way to make it a little bit taller or atleast a way to keep my feet not so close to the ground heh.

Looks sick Billy! Cant wait to see that thing at 06! :w00t:

Yo thats some serious Business. You better Start Wearing your MX Boots and even that wont help if your foot gets under there. On that Beast and no Fenders, it could rip your leg off. Maybe the Swing Arm is too long? Maybe need to raise the Rear up a couple of inches.
Either that or its time for Nerf Bar, Double Wide Kickup Peg time. Im tellin ya the Nerf Bars that Guy put on his 250R are really cool looking but allso make it safer. Get a set and Cut em shorter so they come out allmost to the Edge of the Rear Tire and make some mounting brackets and Mount them babies. Might Save a Leg from getting ruined.
I take it this is purly a Drag Trike? If its for all riding I think the Swinger is too long and thats keeping you low. But im sure you will figure it out, its your Monster. Just be carefull, we all want to see you and your Trike at the Fest.:beer
Are those Super Scoops or Regular they look different but cool. I've never really seen the Biggger Air Scoops before I think. Just curious because I think they look cool.

nice trike, you might be able to solve your shock swinger interface by bringing the shock to a machine shop and having a new shock end made up to match the swing arm. I believe the coupling is threaded to the shock shaft.

Its a Laegers (spelling?) CR500 conversion. I was once a dirtbike.
Meat, those are CR shrouds on a CR tank.

Comin along nicely Billy. While your at it do the override tranny mod. It really helps;)
Louis Mielke
01-14-2006, 10:49 AM
Override trans mod. Ok start talking whats that all about. I've seen wide ratio kits but they're nearly impossible to get ahold of.
3Razors
01-14-2006, 11:07 AM
Its strictly for drag racing. Allows you to up-shift with full throttle and not having to use the clutch. Definately a necessacity for serious competition. You modify the shift drum and forks. Ohton racing does good work for that.
Wide ratio kits are really good for use in the cr500 trikes. Your right though they are tough to find!
Billy Golightly
01-14-2006, 01:48 PM
Theres a guy at www.cr500riders.com I think it is that was selling a new wide ratio kit for about $500. A little bit spendy for me.
I was thinkin about the override...I might do that later on down the road too. I think my next thing is to get my extra topend I have re-sleeved and get some good port work done on it. Ohton racing is actually who I was thinking about sending it to.

Good choice Billy. Charlie at ohton racing had the fastest nos/alcohol cr500 I ever saw run. He knows how to setup the 500. Great to deal with too.
