I got a 85 200x last week and having a hard time starting it cold. If i shut it off it will start right back up easy. It runs great i took it out and rode it for a hour to see if everything else is working and check for laeks. Tried to set the idle and the screw is really touchy eather 1600 or 1000 RPM. any help would be appricated.

Maybe the motor doesnt have enough power or whatever to suck in the gas when your just kicking it.....possibly a new plug needed.....ummmm carburetor needs some cleaning...

Do you need to pull it behind something to start it, or just kick it 30 times? Whats your compression?
I'll ask the obvious: Do you choke it when it's cold?

I have to kick it at least 12 times. Mess with the choke what seems fine. Changed the plug. Took the carb apart cleaned it up, it looks fine. So in the AM I am going to check the compression, timing, valve adjustment and read the Clymer some more. I was wondering if they were the same problem or seperate ones. I will find out in the AM when i do more troubleshooting. Thanks

I had the same problem exactly, it ended up being compression. I put a new piston/rings in it (with cylinder hone) and the idle setting started working perfectly and it starts 2nd kick everytime.
Good Luck.

Well the intake valve was not closing all the way. So I adjusted the valves and she fires right up 2 or 3 kicks. The idle is not correct yet and the compression is 130 and comes up when I oil it, so it is going to wait until I get a friends 200s running. Thanks for all the help. Paul 8)
