Tecate experts: I want to replace the clutch plates and disks on my 84 Tecate. Is it pretty easy? What should I be aware of? Should I buy the replacement 85 KXT plates and disks or try to find a set for the 84? Please advise, Thanks.

The plates are relatively easy to change out. You will have to drain the oil, take off the kick starter, take off a coolant line, and maybe take off the rear break pedal. Once you get it apart you will need to remove the bolts from the clutch basket and then pull out your plates. As far as what plates to use the 84/85 tecate plates should be the same. Don't really remember as it has been a while since I have done a clutch in any of my tecates. hope that helped

Yes, I put that kit in my 85 and its been great, trouble free. Make sure to soak your clutch plates in motor oil a few hours before you install them.

Nice. Thanks for the info all. What weight oil do you recommend upon completion? Any favorite brands?

BGM,

Any other parts that need to come off the motor prior to the job? Any suggestions to ease the removal of the kicker?

The waterpump cover and propeller need to be removed to remove the outside clutch cover but its all very straight foward once you remove that. Do you have a manual? The kicker is just one nut to remove and it should be easily slid, pryed off.

I don't have a manual but I did print the schematics via the Kawasaki website. BGM Thanks again for the advice. I'm going to tackle the job this weekend. Then I'll ask your advice on bleeding the rear brake, I have tried everything!
