trans locking up

i have a 1971 honda atc 90, jsut baught about a month ago and all of a sudden my transmission starts to lock up when shifting! and it takes some effort of playing around to get it back to nutral, and then i could drive again and it would do the same thing. So now it has gotton so bad it locks up in first gear going about half thorotle. Anybody had this problem before?? if it is the trans do i even dre to take it apart? i am a not a professional when it comes to motors esp this one, thanks guys

This could be a 1 of many different problems. To better help pin point the true problem we will need more info.
Does it shift in 2nd, 3rd, 4th ok?
Does it lock up while taking off?
Does it lock up while slowing down?
Does it lock up while moving at a constant speed?

What happened when this started locking up?

What I suspect is that either the shifter pawl broke or the bolt in the end of the shirting tumbler has broken / came loose.

it does it in any gear i am in or has done it in all of the gears. At first in only did it when i down shifted! but now i can't even drive 5ft. w/o it locking up. So if i am not fimular with engines do i dear to try to fix the problem? ovously i have to split the case but do i have to take the head valve chain off and every other component? or would it be easyer for me to buy a new engine? thanks alot for the info

How's the oil level?
Make sure it's not something else locking up, like the chain piling up or rear bearings, maybe. Rear brakes might be locking up or something.
Check the easy stuff first before you go splitting cases.

ya i am likeing it already!! Chain pileing up can be an issue, but what gets me is it was getting worse and worse now i can't even drive the dang thing. could that still be the chain thing? My chain thechnor was pretty lose when i first got it and the locking up didn't occur so finally after tinkering around i thghtned it up. and after that it started doing my little problem here that i am haveing. Now my problem as that i dropped the engine out and *Edited* are telling me thins which means i have to put it back togather, lol

Check the chain and such ( as mentioned above ) first. I do not think you will have to split your cases to fix this, but you will need to remove the right side cover ( clutch ).
